If you’ve ever wondered what happens to a Birkin before it lands on its next owner’s arm, I recently got an inside look. I toured Fashionphile’s New York City flagship with Angela Dotson, Senior Vice President of Client and New Market Development, to see how one of the country’s largest luxury resale retailers authenticates, restores, prices, and sells thousands of designer pieces every day. I left with a much better understanding of what makes a bag worth buying, why resale is currently booming, and the insider tips every luxury shopper should know before making an investment.

Meet Angela Dotson

Angela Dotson has spent years helping shape Fashionphile’s approach to luxury resale. As Senior Vice President of Client and New Market Development, she oversees customer education, emerging markets, and the evolving ways shoppers buy, sell, and invest in designer goods. During my tour, she shared insights into everything from authentication and craftsmanship to the brands and styles dominating today’s resale market.

Inside Fashionphile: What Happens Before a Luxury Bag Reaches You

Whether you're making an appointment to shop or simply walking in to browse, Fashionphile’s New York City flagship feels like a fashion lover’s dream. It's one of just three flagship locations, serving as both a luxury boutique and behind-the-scenes hub where pre-owned designer bags begin their next chapter. Here, clients can buy, sell, or consign in person, while simultaneously, every bag is undergoing a meticulous process before it’s ready for its next owner.

Dotson walked me through exactly what happens after a bag arrives. Hundreds of thousands of pieces flow through the flagship each year, and still: each piece is carefully authenticated, restored, photographed, and prepared for sale by a team of specialists whose expertise takes years to develop.

Their authenticators are incredibly analytical, examining everything from stitching and hardware to date codes, leather, and construction details. Once a bag has been authenticated, it moves to restoration. Rather than trying to make a piece look brand new, the team focuses on preserving its original craftsmanship. From there, it’s professionally photographed, carefully packaged, and prepared for its next owner.

If you’re shopping in New York, the experience is just as memorable. After browsing Fashionphile’s online catalog, your selections are brought out on a conveyor system for you to inspect up close before making a decision. It’s part luxury boutique, part fashion fantasy and truly unlike any shopping experience I’ve had before.

The State of Luxury Resale

Luxury resale has evolved from a niche corner of fashion into one of the industry’s fastest growing markets. According to McKinsey’s State of Fashion 2026 report, the secondhand fashion and luxury market is expected to grow two to three times faster than the primary market through 2027. This growth is largely fueled by changing consumer habits, increased trust in authentication, and digital platforms like Fashionphile that make buying pre-owned designer items easier than ever.

Today’s shoppers aren’t just looking for a deal, they’re looking for access to iconic pieces that may no longer be available in boutiques, investment-worthy styles with strong resale value, and the confidence that comes with buying from a trusted source. In an age where everything feels trend-driven and oversaturated, customers are gravitating towards styles that feel more unique and self-expressive. With the rise of influencers, AI, and shop-my-link culture, we’re seeing a return to individuality and secondhand shopping is a perfect way to exhibit that.

Dotson says younger customers are now more invested in resale than ever. Gen Z and Millennials are approaching luxury differently than previous generations. Instead of buying one forever bag, shoppers are building collections, trading pieces in, and investing in styles they’ll love now while keeping an eye on long-term value.

The Luxury Bags Shoppers Want Most Right Now

Unsurprisingly, the resale market is still led by the “holy trinity” of luxury handbags: Hermès, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. These heritage brands continue to command strong demand thanks to their timeless designs, craftsmanship, and enduring resale value.

At the same time, younger shoppers are shaping what’s next. Fashionphile has seen increased interest in brands like The Row, Miu Miu, and Bottega Veneta as Gen Z continues to embrace luxury resale.

Beyond brands, shoppers are increasingly searching for bags with personality. Sequined Fendi Baguettes have seen an 89% increase in searches year over year, while mesh, raffia, and metallic finishes continue trending across brands like Chanel and Celine. Animal prints are also having a major resurgence, with searches for snakeskin bags +17,600% over last year. Zebra, cow, and cheetah prints have experienced similarly dramatic growth.

Evening bags are making a comeback, too. Searches for Hermès clutches have increased more than 2,600%, while gold clutches are significantly outperforming silver as shoppers embrace metallic tones.

But perhaps the biggest appeal of shopping resale isn’t simply finding a better price, it’s discovering something unique that isn’t sitting on every boutique shelf this season.

Is Vintage Luxury Actually Better?

When it comes to vintage handbags, it’s a common misconception that the quality is better. But according to Dotson, the answer is more nuanced.

Older pieces often feature thicker leather and heavier hardware which can make them feel more substantial in hand. While those details contribute to their appeal, they don’t necessarily mean today’s luxury bags are made with lower quality materials. Instead, craftsmanship has evolved alongside consumer preferences. Modern luxury bags are intentionally lighter, making them more comfortable to carry every day. No one wants their shoulder doing all the heavy lifting before they’ve even filled their bag.

Rather than focusing on whether a bag is vintage or new, Dotson recommends paying attention to craftsmanship, condition, and whether the style fits your lifestyle. Sometimes the best investment isn’t the oldest bag but the one you’ll actually carry.

5 Luxury Resale Shopping Tips I Learned at Fashionphile

If there’s one thing I learned after touring Fashionphile, it’s that buying luxury resale is about much more than finding the lowest price. Here are the biggest takeaways I left with:

  • Buy the bag you genuinely love. The best investment is one you’ll actually wear.
  • Condition matters. Pay close attention to wear, corners, hardware, and leather when comparing listings.
  • Classic styles are classics for a reason. Timeless silhouettes from brands like Hermès, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton tend to hold their value well.
  • Think beyond one purchase. Buying pre-owned doesn’t have to be the end of the story. You can trade pieces in as your collection evolves. According to Business of Fashion, over 60% of active resale sellers have resold a luxury accessory for more than they originally paid.
  • Shop with retailers you trust. Authentication, transparent condition reports, and customer support are just as important as price.
