Recently, I spent over $12 over the course of one fall weekend, renting at least four iconic 90s movies so that I could begin my Seasonal Melancholia Epoch. Whether Susan Sarandon was being ornery in Stepmom, or Diane Keaton was dramatically cutting off her turtleneck in the Hamptons in Something’s Gotta Give (technically 2003), the high-caliber knits were in abundance! The fabrics were so wholesome and well-sourced, they almost made these women…effervescent. 

What was it about these women in these sweaters in this time period that made us all yearn to turn the clocks back? I think it was because it was cool to be aspirational without being overstated, and a beautiful sweater was enough to quietly signal to the rest of us that there was a whole beautiful life attached to that sweater—a life that was likely mixed with leisure, 5-wick candles, reading glasses for actual reading, new love, or worst case: death and divorce (but only worst case!).
