When I first discovered Rent the Runway in 2018, clothing rental felt novel, almost mysterious; I approached with apprehension. In the 8 years since, the fashion rental market has exploded, from monthly subscriptions like Nuuly and FashionPass to peer-to-peer rentals like Pickle. There are more ways than ever to fill your closet with new clothing and accessories, at a fraction of retail prices.

‍BNTO is one of the newest players in the space. Launched in 2025, the subscription service had been popping up on my Instagram feed so often that when the opportunity to try BNTO for myself came along, my curiosity was already piqued. It was an obvious and eager yes.

A Bento Box for Your Wardrobe

BNTO is a monthly clothing rental service that carries a wide range of trendy pieces from emerging designers and globally known brands like Damson Madder, ASTR, and GUIZIO. For $98 a month, you can rent six new pieces including clothing, accessories, jewelry, and even shoes.

The interface itself is bright, well categorized, and easy to navigate. In many ways, it’s indicative of the clients the brand is trying to reach–digitally savvy, contemporary dressers in discovery mode. There are so many ways to browse. You can search by brand, category, or occasion, and BNTO lets you get even more granular. Looking for a brown, short-sleeved midi dress to wear to a cocktail party? You can filter for these exact specs. There’s also a search bar with great functionality.

The selection on BNTO is diverse, with a mix of budget-friendly and premium brands. Styles definitely lean funkier and trendier, but there are plenty of great basics and minimal styles too. The items in the premium collection come at an additional monthly fee of $45-$95 each.

With so much to choose from, six items may not be enough. And if that’s the case, you can add up to four more items to your box for an additional monthly fee of $16 each.

Flexibility is one of BNTO’s main selling points. You can pause or cancel at any time. If you love what you ordered and want to keep it all for another month, you can. If you want to send your box back early, you can do that too. Your billing cycle will simply adjust to that new date. If you love something so much you never want to send it back, you can purchase it for up to 75% off the retail price. BNTO even rewards you with Bonus Credits that you can put towards these purchases. You can earn Bonus Credits from sending your boxes in early, referring friends to the platform, and writing reviews.

The brand leverages AI to personalize your shopping experience, even integrating a personal stylist they call “Maya” (we’ll talk more about her later) to help you pull pieces and style outfits. Whatever the role of AI here, I was really impressed with BNTO’s user experience.

My BNTO Experience

After a quick and easy signup process, I was a BNTO member. Next came the hardest part: picking out what to rent. BNTO may be a newer player, but their selection still feels huge and unique. There are pieces I’ve never seen before and brands I’ve never heard of. I was stoked to see styles from Samsøe Samsøe, a brand I discovered while shopping in Copenhagen and have not been able to find since, on the platform.

While picking out what to rent, I had two important events in mind: a wedding and seeing Harry Styles at Madison Square Garden. I knew I wanted to wear something shiny to Harry Styles and unfortunately, my closet is barren when it comes to sequins and metallics. And while I have a few wedding dresses in the rotation, I was just itching for something fresh.

Like any rental service, some of my first choices were unavailable in my size. I also didn’t love that the premium pieces came at an added charge. While I understand the rationale, it’s a bit of a bummer to find something you love and then realize it would nearly double your monthly subscription cost. Thankfully, you can filter for non-premium items only if you’re sticking to a budget. Even so, there was no shortage of fun, non-premium pieces I was excited about.

While you’re searching, there’s an option to toggle on BNTO AI and chat with Maya, the brand’s AI stylist. Maya is still in beta testing, and truthfully I found her help a bit underwhelming. I got much better results keeping the AI off and simply searching for the keywords of what I was looking for.

For my first box, I picked out the following pieces: Motel Trudis Wrap Top ($58), Rixo Ursula Top ($360), SLVRLAKE London Turn Up Jean ($329), Tyler Mcgillivary Emma Dress ($235), Seraé Sabine Blouse ($178), Loopi Charli Leather Bag ($148).

I placed my order on September 21 and it arrived on September 25. Everything came neatly packaged in a reusable BNTO box, with a prepaid return label.

I’ve had my fair share of meh experiences with clothing rentals. I’ve had orders where half of the items don’t fit properly, but I’m stuck with them for the month. To my surprise, everything in this BNTO order fit me perfectly. Chalk it up to beginner’s luck or the extensive research I did reading each piece’s reviews, but I was really happy everything worked.

Each item arrived in great condition. Some pieces even came new with tags. I never ended up wearing the Seraé blouse –while it fit well, it just wasn’t my style in person. I wasn’t bummed about it because I got so much wear out of everything else.

The SLVRLAKE jeans are so comfortable and flattering. I’ve worn them at least once a week. The RIXO top felt like the perfect age-appropriate going-out top my wardrobe has been missing. I’m tempted to make both of these pieces permanent fixtures in my closet. The Tyler Mcgillivary dress was the perfect example of why BNTO is such a great platform. It was beautiful, bold, and fit like a glove. I really enjoyed wearing it to a wedding, but I know it’s an item I don’t need to wear again.

An Affordable Way to Keep Your Wardrobe Fresh

As I’ve gotten older, my wardrobe has gotten a bit less interesting. When I shop, I look for pieces with an enduring appeal rather than trendy items I’ll be over by next season. I still crave that feeling of putting on a new outfit. And I tend to have a schedule of events with hyper-specific dress codes.

For me, BNTO is the perfect addition to my wardrobe. For around $100 a month, I get access to what feels like a whole new closet. The selection suits my needs, with a mix of everyday pieces and special-occasion outfits that fill the gaps in my wardrobe without a long-term commitment.

Despite all of the targeted ads I received, BNTO still feels a bit under the radar. That, and the fact I had such a good experience, really made me want to gatekeep it. But I can’t. Because everyone deserves to feel this good about their wardrobe refresh.

If you often find yourself wishing you had a new outfit for a wedding, trip, or any event, but you just can’t commit to purchasing something new for whatever reason, BNTO is worth a look. This may have been my first box, but it definitely won’t be my last.
