If one show defined New York fashion in the 2010s, it was undoubtedly Lena Dunham’s masterpiece Girls. I remember watching the show while I was in college, laughing at a neon mesh muscle tee only to see five lookalikes at a rave the next night. It felt like Dunham had captured lightning in a bottle, creating a show so perfectly of the moment that all you could was laugh (and maybe cry a little).
This of course means that I’ve been dreaming about the costumes on Dunham’s new Netflix show Too Much since the moment the series was announced. Too Much is about Jess, and Jess (the hilarious Meg Stalter) is a mess. Heartbroken and phone-addicted, she spends her nights stalking her ex’s new influencer fiancé, as consumed by the other woman’s adventures in knitwear as she is by rehashing memories of her relationship. Jess moves from New York to London to escape her heartache, dreaming about finding romance straight out of Bridget Jones or Pride and Prejudice. Instead, she finds Felix (Will Sharpe), a (formerly) womanizing musician who embraces Jess’s many quirks, hairless emotional dog and all.
In the same way that Girls perfectly captured the ironic indie sleaze vibe of the ‘10s, Too Much nails the anything goes eclecticicism of fashion in the ‘20s. Costume designer Arielle Cooper-Lethem (who also worked on The Listeners, directed by Too Much co-star Janicza Bravo) blended vintage pieces and work from independent designers to create an incredible 150 costume changes for Jess alone. Jess is a chronically online romantic who wears her heart on her sleeve, and her eclectic wardrobe perfectly evokes the closet of a woman who’s both clicked on one too many Instagram ads at 3AM and obsesses over period pieces and rom coms from the ‘90s and ‘00s.
The sleek, stylish ‘00s had Sex and the City, the indie sleaze ‘10s had Girls, and now the no-rules ‘20s have Too Much. Read on for our essential style guide for 2025’s most relatable show.

Rom Com Queen

One of the things I love most about Jess is that she’s absolutely unafraid to take up space. While her outfits may not always be office-appropriate, they’re unapologetically her: bold, unique, and charmingly messy. Celia B designed Jess’s instantly iconic floral raincoat that she wears while forcing new boyfriend Felix to take photos in front of the blue door from Notting Hill, one of her favorite movies. The Spanish designer specializes in over-the-top, colorful womenswear like this ruffles-for-days Penelope Jacket.

If 2025 had an answer to the iconic neon yellow mesh tank that Girls’ Hannah Horvath wears sans-bra, it would be this crocheted top from Celia B. It would be so cute layered over a slip dress, or, if you’re feeling bold, take a cue from Girls and wear it solo.

Too Real

Even on a Netflix show that’s a lot lighter and more fun than HBO’s Girls, Lena Dunham isn’t afraid to show us characters who live and talk and dress as messily as we all do in real life. In 2025, that means depicting just how much time we spend rotting in bed, looking at our phones. Jess leans into the bed-forward lifestyle with a wide array of nightgowns, ranging from vintage pioneer-woman-style sacks to cute babydolls. Too Much’s costume designer tapped London brand If Only If for many of Jess’s nighties. I absolutely love their Heather Nightdress, comfy enough to wear in bed but cute enough to pair with boots for a trip to the farmer’s market.

Jess wears this pink nightdress from If Only If multiple times in the season, and even has a custom matching nightgown for her beloved dog/creature, Astrid.

The Other Woman

Imagine the worst possible person for your ex to start dating immediately after you break up, and she probably looks like Emily Ratajkowski. Emrata plays Wendy, Jess’s ex’s new fiancé who is internet famous for her chunky knitwear and quirky pet iguana. The Too Much team went to cult London knitwear brand Sulk for Wendy’s colorful handknit pieces. I spent a significant amount of last winter knitting balaclavas for all my friends, and will be copying this Sulk balaclava’s black and algae color scheme as soon as knitting season starts again.

Iconic Guest Stars

A huge part of the fun of Too Much is its incredible roster of guest stars. This look for Naomi Watts as the dissatisfied but chic wife of Jess’s boss was so perfect it made me laugh out loud. The balloon sleeves made me imagine a past life for the character working in PR for a Scandi fashion brand before being sequestered as a yummy mummy in her beautiful Notting Hill townhouse. GANNI is of course the master of the puffy Scandi-chic sleeve.

At one point during a disastrous dinner party, Jess finds herself in a bathroom doing coke with her boss’ wife. The lonely woman’s medicine cabinet was of course laser-accurate, an IYKYK easter egg of upscale beauty products. The two women end up having a coked-out heart to heart about their dogs while sharing this Westman Atelier lipstick.

Love Conquers All

The heart of Too Much is Jess and Felix’s London-meets-New-York romance. The night Felix and Jess meet, he’s clad in a cool jaded London rocker all-black ensemble, while Jess wears an adorable, romantic dress from Foundry Muse, a perfect illustration of their opposites-attract chemistry.

I love Jess’s make up throughout the series, including her signature black cat eye. I haven’t touched another eyeliner since trying this buttery, highly pigmented Victoria Beckham Beauty eyeliner a few weeks ago. An instant classic recommended to me by a make up artist for film & TV.

Lena Dunham is famously a manicure enthusiast, and her onscreen avatar Jess shares her love for a good mani. Canadian brand Le Manoir’s Gelcare line is my favorite at home gel polish, long lasting and in the most beautiful colors. Try their Cornflower Blue shade to get Jess’ signature blue nails.
