When we bought our first house a little over three years ago, we lovingly dubbed the backyard “the jungle.” The previous owner was clearly a big fan of gardening – but more the wild, overgrown kind – and naturally, they left it all for us to deal with. Thankfully, my husband has a great eye for design and jumped right into planning a new layout that first summer.
Fast forward three years, and while it has come a long way, it still felt kind of unfinished, mainly because we never got around to furnishing it. Since we basically live outside all summer with our little ones, I figured it was finally time to invest in some furniture and decor that would turn our backyard from a hot mess to a proper little haven.

Discovering Plow & Hearth
In my search for the right outdoor furniture and accessories, I found myself quite skeptical of a lot of brands I was seeing. Many seemed to offer prices too good to be true, making me think that the product wouldn’t last. When I came across Plow & Hearth, I was encouraged by the fact they have a good price point (not too low, not too high) and have been around since 1980! It takes some serious brand trust to be around for that long, so I figured I’d give a few pieces a try from them.
As I dug in to learn more, I learned the brand actually started as a small country store in Virginia. Now a major retailer of home and garden products, this is the true American dream, which I always love seeing and supporting. Even throughout their decades in business, it’s clear their original principles of business (honesty, integrity, and commitment to customer service) have remained intact. Not only that, but they also have a catalog of hundreds of products to pick from – all of which ship right to your door! In this day and age of DTC, I truly can’t fathom driving to Lowe’s, picking up all the stuff I need, driving it home in our truck, unloading, and assembling. Thankfully, when I ordered, I skipped all the steps except assembly! More on that soon….
I’ve recently been standing while my kids play in the hose or in the watertable. No shade to standing, but I’d rather be sitting when I can with two littles! The Lancaster Eucalyptus Wood bench is such a sweet addition to our backyard that allows me to sit down, relax, and actually enjoy my backyard. It took me about 30 minutes to assemble, but the instructions were clear and I was working solo in the heat and bugs… so you could probably do it faster than I! Of all the things I’ve assembled in life, this was one of the easiest, and looks amazing to boot.

We tossed our fire ring out last year because to the way it looked. We used it a lot (and probably for things we shouldn’t have burned) and it wasn’t looking too hot. Thankfully, we upgraded to the Timberline Wood-Burning Fire Pit from Plow & Hearth this year, and it has been so lovely. Beyond providing a fun outdoorsy look, I love that it’s raised (and doesn’t kill my grass) and has a grate for easy roasting of things. We are quite “camp-y” in the summer, and the grate has come in handy already!

Does anyone else have that problem where their dogs kill all their grass in a certain path because of their foot traffic? When I discovered Plow & Hearth’s roll-out pathway, I was pumped. Finally, a way to cover up the grass that was and now only sort-of-is! It looks great and is easy to clean with just a rinse of the hose. I do wish it were more flexible than it is – it is very much curved in a specific angle – so I could configure it more. They do have straight wood pathways if that’s your jam, but the curve certainly adds a level of sophistication.

A Cozy Outdoor Upgrade That Lasts
All in all, Plow & Hearth makes it super easy to cozy up your outdoor space without having to lug anything home from the hardware store (my favorite part, for sure!). With their 40-year-and-counting history, regular product drops, and awesome customer support, it’s hard to say really anything negative about the brand. If I had to, I’d say the style is definitely specific, so it works best in certain spaces, and you’ll need to carve out a little time for assembly. But if you’re going for that warm, inviting backyard feel, it’s totally worth checking out and giving yourself a little backyard makeover, too!
