If you've been debating trying out a clothing rental subscription but can't decide which route makes most sense for your lifestyle and budget, this is the kind of review I wish I'd had before signing up for my first one. Because by now, I've tried most of them — Stitch Fix way back in the day, Rent the Runway for a few events, then Nuuly and BNTO for new brand discovery. So I went into my first month of FashionPass with a good amount of context. Here's how everything went down from signup to try-on, with all the details you need to know along the way.

How FashionPass Works

FashionPass launched in 2016 as a casually trend-forward alternative to Rent the Runway. Their catalog features 400-plus brands, including well-known names like Free People, LoveShackFancy, Show Me Your Mumu, and For Love & Lemons. It fits in the “everyday” wear category more than most of the clothing rentals I’ve tried — and that’s a good thing because that’s what I actually wear. Unless I have a slew of events or a vacation coming up, I have no business renting as aspirationally as my brain wants to. I’m more of a jeans-and-top person most days, not so much floor-length silk slip dress.

The service runs $125 a month for 10 styles total, delivered across two shipments of five pieces each, with an accessory included per order. And you can pause or cancel at any time. However, there's currently a promo of $59/month per month for your first two months, so the entry feels low-stakes enough to give it a whirl. For the context I mentioned above, Nuuly and Rent the Runway will run you ~$100/month for 5 or 6 items and go up from there.

The site is incredibly detailed and easy to use. And the reviews: so useful!

Getting Started

Account setup is quick and straightforward: enter your height, weight, and typical sizing, then immediately start browsing. Every product page includes model measurements, the size she's wearing, and a short summary of user reviews (something I referenced heavily for fit advice).

Something I extra appreciated was that their desktop site has small pop-ups that surface the exact information you'd otherwise spend time hunting through an FAQ section: how to place your next order, how to transfer a piece you want to keep renting into a future month, and what to do if you've misplaced your return bag. It helped me clock the areas I needed to know and removed a lot of the guesswork that can come with learning how a new subscription works.

The individual wrapping ensures everything arrives fresh and clean!

What to Expect When Your Order Arrives

Shipping runs one to three days when you place before noon PT, and the return process seems just as painless. My order arrived super fast, and all of the pieces I chose were individually wrapped. Everything was immaculately clean and felt brand new. The no-frills packaging included a pre-labeled return bag along with an instructional card to reiterate their process. Honestly, I really appreciate the lengths FashionPass goes to make sure you, the customer, know exactly what to do.

Inside My First Order

I went in strategically with a loose styling plan for each piece, but Los Angeles weather had other ideas for most of them.

The Line & Dot Alfie Mini Dress was intended to be a long-sleeve-and-tights situation. Then LA hit 96 degrees in March. Thankfully the oversized fit was loose enough to not lose my mind (because of the heat, and because of things touching my body) and the structure dressed up nicely with accessories and good shoes. Also: pockets.

The Baobab Corsica Top — a $275 pistachio green top I envisioned for a daytime poolside event vibe, which never made it onto my calendar. It did, however, end up looking cute with an intentionally visible bra for a quick dinner out. I also fully plan to copy the styling on their website and pair with a vintage head scarf.

The PISTOLA Lexi Jean was the item I was most skeptical about. I am the type of person who swears you should only buy jeans if you've tried them on in person, and I know I'm the worst at remembering to return things. But the subscription model makes online denim ordering significantly more low stakes. If it doesn't work out, you were returning it anyway; and if it does, you're fully informed before committing to a purchase.

I read every review, followed the summarized fit notes (snug hips, no stretch, looser waist, low rise, petite-friendly length) and they fit exactly how I imagined they would. I was genuinely surprised. I'm keeping this size via transfer and renting one size up next order to decide whether I want a looser fit.

The LoveShackFancy x FashionPass Jacque Top is a brand I've always liked but never quite bought into, mostly because a $355 top is a hard sell without a fitting room. Again, the sizing notes pointed me toward the right fit (boxy, slightly sheer, petite-friendly ) and it fit the Chloé-adjacent styling I planned in my mind. This is truly what the rental model excels at.

Then I grabbed two Free People basics, fighting my usual instinct to pick something more exciting. My thinking was that these could be low-stakes wildcard basics with great cost-per-wear potential if they worked out. They didn't this time around, but I still think it's a solid approach.

Free People Lila Cardi (L) and Free People Neria Tank (R)

The Free People Lila Cardi was adorable and ran smaller than I'd prefer. I should have heeded the advice to size up! I could have worn it as a top instead, but LA turned into the inside of an oven so that became a no-go. Goes back.

I threw the Free People Neria Tank in for science. I liked it, but didn't love it (shoulders a bit too long for my frame) so it goes back as well. Though now I'm tempted to try more Free People basics, which was not something I expected to say at the start of this. Hot tip: Because FashionPass allows two orders per month, you can easily send back items you don’t like and refresh for your second order.

No room for confusion here!

How Returns (and Transfers) Work

A pre-addressed return bag comes inside your original shipment — drop it off at FedEx and you're done. If you want more time with a particular item (like my Pistola jeans), the transfer option is clutch. Instead of returning them with everything else, I designate them as a transfer through the My Orders page. They’ll carry over into my next rental, take up one spot in that order, and go back with that return instead.

Just make sure to re-select the transfer before sending your return or the item goes back automatically. And anything you're not transferring goes back together — returning items piecemeal will trigger a purchase charge on whatever you kept.

An actually-enjoyable subscription experience.

The Verdict

After all of my trial-and-error subscription experiences, I can easily say FashionPass sits at the top of the list. Their focus on insanely fast shipping, user review fit guides, and wide variety of style options (like a tennis-chic outfit I happened to need for an event) removed my online order hesitation. And with their $59/month intro promo, it's worth finding out if it’ll work for you too.
