Coyuchi Started Making Organic Bedding Decades Before "Organic" Became a Buzzword

In partnership with Coyuchi. Editor’s Note: We only select and work with partners that meet our quality standards, so you can rest assured we only endorse products we believe in.

A quick search of "best organic bedding" or “softest towels for sensitive skin” renders a wall of brands all claiming to be the softest, cleanest, most non-toxic option to ever touch your skin. Oh, and they somehow all have radically low prices to boot.

Even for a savvy consumer like myself, these claims are mind-numbing. You start to wonder if anyone is actually doing the thing — or just really, really good at saying they are.

Coyuchi is doing the thing. And, they’ve been doing it long before “organic” or “non-toxic” or even “fair trade” were even on a marketing manager’s radar. Founded in 1991, the Northern California brand has always operated with a few golden rules: no shortcuts, greenwashing or harsh chemicals, anywhere in the process — ever.

We recently covered the brand in depth, and the more we learned about their values and process, the more we knew they are the real deal. Their Undyed collection is the purest expression of their ethos: pieces that skip the dye process entirely, so what you're getting is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton in its most natural form.

Coyuchi's Undyed line is gentle on sensitive skin, good for the planet, and beautifully timeless. In other words, the brand is everything that wall of search results promised. Consider your search officially over.

The Case for Going Undyed

Coyuchi's Undyed collection is a hallmark of the brand. Whether it’s a robe, bath mat, towel or sheet set, each piece is cotton in its most pure form: unbleached, undyed, and untouched from the way it came out of the soil. And, the collection’s warm, natural tone isn't an intentional color choice (though admittedly, it does happen to go with everything), but simply what organic cotton actually looks like when it’s processed mindfully.

Skipping the dye process isn't just an aesthetic decision, though. No dyes means no harsh synthetic chemicals used at any point in fabrication. And on the environmental side, I was surprised to learn that buying undyed bedding and bath reduces CO2 emissions by 43% compared to dyed fabrics, and conserves energy and water both in production and every time you wash.

And for those of us with sensitive skin, Coyuchi’s undyed fabric won't react against you the way synthetic finishes can, which means you can experience the luxury of incredibly soft textiles, while also making a genuinely good decision for the earth.

And if you're wondering whether a brand can actually deliver on all of the above? My decade-old duvet cover says yes.

The Brand I’ve Been Coming Back to for a Decade

I first discovered Coyuchi the old-fashioned way: wandering into their small shop in Point Reyes, CA. What struck me wasn't just the softness of the textiles (though, yes, the softness is unmatched), but the intentional design of all the pieces in the store: everything was elevated and timeless without veering into stuffy or overly bohemian. The brand walks that fine line between being earth-friendly and luxurious in a way that wasn’t trying too hard.

Soon after that first trip, I bought a Coyuchi duvet cover. I still have it and nearly ten years later, it’s held up beautifully after many washes and many afternoons serving as a fav naptime spot for my dog. That kind of longevity is the hallmark of brands that treat sustainability and quality as the same thing (think: Patagonia). Worth noting, Coyuchi has been doing it since the early '90s, long before the rest of the industry caught on. Some things, it turns out, really do get better with time.
