There’s truly few compliments as great as: “you smell amazing.” Whether someone stops you on the street to ask what perfume you’re wearing or a friend immediately reaches for your fragrance bottle when she visits, the right scent has a way of making an impression long after you’ve left the room.
But what actually makes a perfume worthy of a compliment? Is it the notes, the longevity, or simply the way it interacts with your skin? As beauty editors, we’re constantly testing new launches and revisiting old favorites. And some fragrances stand out, not only because we love wearing them but because other people notice them.
To find the scents that truly deserve a spot in your rotation, we rounded up the perfumes our most trusted beauty editors receive the most compliments on. We also spoke to Yvan Jacqueline, President of Americas for INITIO, about the art of creating a memorable fragrance, the notes that tend to appeal to others, and how to find a signature scent of your own.
Consider this your guide to making people ask “what perfume are you wearing?”
What Makes a Perfume Compliment-Worthy?
According to Jacqueline, the secret isn’t simply choosing the strongest or most expensive fragrance. It’s about finding a scent with a distinctive character that feels inviting to the people around you. “The most compelling perfume leaves a lasting impression, has a noticeable yet refined presence, and sparks curiosity, making people want to lean in and ask what you’re wearing” he says.
That balance is important. A fragrance should have enough presence to be noticed, but it shouldn’t overwhelm. As Jacqueline explains, “Ideally, it creates an inviting aura that is noticeable at conversational distance rather than announcing itself across the room.”
TQE Editors’ Most Complimented Perfumes of 2026
“This is, without a doubt, my most complimented fragrance. I can hardly leave the house without someone asking what I’m wearing. It’s actually the scent that inspired this entire article. The combination of oud, patchouli, and musk creates a bold, intoxicating scent that feels rich and completely unforgettable. While it’s definitely an investment, you only need two spritzes for it to last all day, making the bottle well worth it in my opinion. It’s also a fantastic unisex fragrance, with a distinctiveness that makes it just as irresistible on anyone who wears it.” -Mia McManus, Beauty Editor

“Cult Gaia’s Mast Eau de Parfum is one perfume that not only smells absolutely divine with its notes of bergamot, coconut and Brazilian cumaru, but the bottle itself looks so luxurious. Every time I wear this velvety scent, I get stopped at least a couple of times by people just walking by wondering where this unique scent is from. It’s also a scent where if anyone visits and sees it on my vanity, they immediately reach for it to learn more.” -Nikita Charuza, Beauty Editor

“Soft, luminous, and magical. Luna is a citrus-forward eau de toilette (with surprising longevity—it lasts hours) that opens with a gorgeous combination of bergamot, bitter orange, juniper, and rose before settling into a delicate musk base. It’s cooling and comforting, making me think of looking out a window at pale moonlight, puffy clouds, and twinkly little stars. Maybe that imagery is why it’s since become an indispensable part of my evening routine—thanks to a Reddit thread that turned me onto the idea of wearing perfume to bed. I find that Luna is such a lovely scent to spritz on before curling up in a cocoon of crisp, freshly-washed sheets while it gently lulls you to sleep. Also, the bottle is absolutely adorable with its dainty bow and ever-so-tinted bluish hue. Definitely the star of my vanity.” -Hannah Cassidy, Beauty Editor

“This fragrance is so good that I’ve had people ask me for the name and actually write it down. The almond milk top note is especially interesting, giving the scent a creamy, smooth quality that pairs beautifully with jasmine and sandalwood. It strikes that perfect balance between warm, subtly floral, and a little spicy, making it universally appealing. It’s one of those rare fragrances that works just as well for a busy day of meetings as it does for weekend plans in every season.” -Mia McManus, Beauty Editor

“I don’t know how to explain this scent other than it smells like home. And not because it smells like kitchen spice—it’s not that—it smells… comforting. As much as I love florals or say, the scent of jasmine, when it comes to my fragrances, I’m not keen on sweet. I usually lean towards woody, smoky scents, but Coriander is a category all its own. It’s light and peppery—a refreshing choice for day to day one of my go-tos for the last decade.” -Deenie Hartzog-Mislock, Beauty Editor

“Parfums de Marly’s Delina La Rosée is one of the most delicate rose scents I’ve come across during my time as a beauty editor. It’s refreshing, smells like a bouquet of roses, and lasts the whole day. The pink tassel on the bottle is just icing on the cake.” -Nikita Charuza, Beauty Editor

“When I first read the notes of this fragrance—vanilla, tobacco, and amber—I was immediately intrigued. I’m not typically a vanilla girl, but the addition of warm, woody notes convinced me to give it a try. The result is a scent that strikes the perfect balance between sweet and sultry. It’s inviting enough to draw you in, with a mysterious edge that keeps you coming back for more. Every time I wear it, someone asks what perfume I have on. I even had a group of friends over before dinner, and nearly everyone wanted to spritz this one out of my perfume collection. If that’s not a testament to its compliment-getting power, I don’t know what is.” -Mia McManus, Beauty Editor

“I’ve been a fan of Jo Malone for as long as I can remember, with different scents that have marked various eras of my life—from my Pomegranate Noir-wearing aunt to my mother gifting me Bluebell for my birthday. Well, 2026 is my year of Raspberry Ripple. I sampled the fragrance in Sephora on a whim and impulse bought on the spot. The opening is bright, tart, and fizzy, with the most photorealistic raspberry note I’ve ever smelled. It’s so good my eyes glaze over with that initial burst of fruit. However, it quickly dissipates into a faint musk base—so I tend to use a heavy hand when applying or layer with other scents. It actually led down a rabbit hole trying to chase similar raspberry perfumes to no avail. For me, nothing compares to Raspberry Ripple. You’ll see that I’m down to the final dregs of my travel-size spray, so I’ll be forking up for the full bottle ASAP.” -Hannah Cassidy, Beauty Editor

“This fig-focused scent is one of my new favorite fragrances. ‘Lush, woody, fig’ is how it’s described, and it certainly has a heartier olfactory finish than my Coriander. It smells slightly more feminine to me, without being sweet or floral, which I like.” -Deenie Hartzog-Mislock, Beauty Editor

“Dedcool’s Xtra Milk has been in my perfume rotation for a few years now and I view it as my everyday scent. It’s lightweight, not too overpowering with notes of amber, white musk, and bergamot. I’d liken it to the perfect white tee of my fragrance collection.” -Nikita Charuza, Beauty Editor

“This fragrance is one of my go-tos for a night out. It smells unlike anything else in my collection, with a bold, mysterious quality that makes it feel especially suited for after-dark plans. The black cherry top note is gorgeous, and the scent has serious staying power. I (and everyone around me) can still smell it hours later. I love how the brand describes it as ‘a fragrance more dense, more lingering, driven by an overdose of black cherry, designed to leave a lasting trace—deeply unforgettable.’ Honestly, that sums it up perfectly. And as a bonus, the deep red bottle looks just as good displayed on my perfume shelf as the fragrance smells on my skin.” -Mia McManus, Beauty Editor

Honorable Mentions
Which Perfume Notes Get the Most Compliments?
If you’re not sure where to start, Jacqueline recommends “warm notes like vanilla, musk, and sandalwood, as well as soft florals and fruity florals.” These, he explains, “tend to be crowd-pleasers because they feel inviting and universally appealing.”
That doesn’t mean you need to limit yourself to one fragrance family. Our editors’ favorites span creamy vanilla, woody oud, fresh citrus, delicate rose, and juicy raspberry. The common thread is that each scent has a distinctive personality while remaining enjoyable to wear.
How Do You Find a Signature Scent?
Finding your signature scent takes a little experimentation. A perfume that smells wonderful on a friend may develop differently on your skin, and a fragrance you love at first spritz might reveal a different profile several hours later.
Jacqueline recommends choosing something that feels authentic to you and that you'll genuinely enjoy wearing again and again. “Give it time on your skin and pay attention to how it evolves throughout the day,” he advises. “The best signature scent is also one people naturally associate with you.”
Rather than buying a full-size bottle after a single test, wear a sample for a full day and see how the fragrance develops. You can also experiment with different fragrances for different occasions. You might prefer a lighter, fresher scent for everyday wear and something richer for evenings out. There's no rule that says you need to have just one signature fragrance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a perfume last longer?
Longevity depends on the fragrance's composition, how it interacts with your skin, and how it's applied. Some scents naturally last longer than others, while applying perfume to moisturized skin may also help the scent wear more evenly.
How many sprays of perfume should you use?
There isn't a universal number, since fragrance concentration and projection vary. Start with one or two sprays and see how the scent develops. If it's particularly powerful, a lighter application can help keep it noticeable without overwhelming those around you.
What are the best perfume notes for everyday wear?
That depends on your preferences, however, Jacqueline notes that warm notes, soft florals, and fruity florals often appeal to a broad range of people.
