Will our collective ‘90s nostalgia ever end? Whether you obsess over sleek 1998 Prada or covet ultra-wide-leg ‘90s JNCOs, at this point it feels like the ‘90s have been the cornerstone of fashion references for eons. Other recent trends like the “indie sleaze” revival mimic eras that themselves loudly echoed grunge-y 90s culture. It must be asked – will we ever get sick of referencing this decade, or is something about it uniquely suited to algorithmically-influenced aesthetics?
For now, it looks like the trend is holding strong: Hailey Bieber and Gap announced “The Hailey Jean” this week, a two-silhouette collection of slouchy denim jeans that fetishize the mid-90s. Per the collection’s press release, the jeans are inspired by Hailey’s birth year, 1996. Hailey said in the statement, “1996 was the year I was born and I get a lot of style inspiration from the ’90s because there was something so effortless about that era and the way people wore denim.” Gap even tapped iconic ‘90s fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti to lens the campaign.
There’s something undeniably compelling about the last days of the unplugged, pre-internet era, especially when it comes to something as tactile as clothing. And if Bieber’s market-dominating Rhode Beauty is any indicator, we shouldn’t bet against her trend-setting instincts. For now, ‘90s nostalgia is here to stay.
Here are some of our favorite launches of the week, starting with another ‘90s icon:
