January always has stressful undercurrents: temperatures drop, ambitious resolutions prove hard to keep up with, and back-to-school and back-to-work blues set in for all of us. But the first month of 2026 is proving more stressful than most. It’s been very interesting to see how quickly brands are responding to the general tension in the air, emphasizing products’ relaxing, stress-relieving, and cozy qualities. Fragrance companies are using language like “cashmere,” “warmth,” and “intimacy” to describe winter scents, promising wearers a cocoon of comfort. Valentine’s launches are leaning more comfy-date-night-at-home than elaborate-underwear-and-stilettos. A notable number of food brands are eschewing the usual New Year’s resolution / diet angle, pivoting to promote “comfort foods” to give us some solace as winter settles in for real.
Is this just an extension of a post-Covid emphasis on comfort? The influence of Scandinavian “hygge” culture that’s taken the US by storm over the last couple years? Or has the general mood shifted enough for brands to take note and adapt?
Either way, I’m enjoying the chance to slow down and take it easy. As we all take a deep breath before charging ahead into February, I’ve emphasized launches on this week’s Launch Digest that offer a little warmth, comfort, and nourishment. Stay cozy!
