Up is down, down is up, John Galliano is partnering with Zara. I can’t remember the last time I encountered a partnership announcement this polarizing.

Shunned by the fashion community & fired from the top post at Dior in the 2010s following antisemetic comments, Galliano then experienced the kind of career resurgence in the 2020s that most soft-cancelled public figures only dream of. His recent run at Maison Margiela resulted in several of the most influential and celebrated couture shows of the century. His designs were fêted at the Met Gala by Zendaya. Jonathan Anderson peppered his debut couture collection at Dior with tributes to Galliano, who attended the show. Naturally, Galliano’s next move following his 2024 exit from Margiela has been highly scrutinized. Defying speculation, Galliano took the one move no one could have anticipated: embracing fast fashion.

He’s not the first couturier to jump from luxury fashion to high street: Zac Posen and Clare Waight Keller are currently running Gap and Uniqlo, respectively. And Galliano’s 2 year partnership deal appears to be less of a full time creative commitment than a strategic consultancy arrangement. Reactions have been mixed. Some people are heralding the move as some sort of populist stance. Others are identifying it as a lucrative, short-term money grab. Regardless, I think it’s telling that a massive fashion conglomerate like Zara was able to put together an offer enticing enough to tempt a man who embodies the elitist, high luxury ethos of couture. Is this the signal of a larger trend of talent-poaching away from the increasingly volatile luxury fashion ecosystem? Or is it just a flashy move from one of fashion’s more controversial figures? Will these bold face names successfully distract from ongoing conversations about sustainability and labor ethics at these large retailers? Only time will tell.

While we wait to see what Galliano cooks up for his first Zara collection this fall, here are the week’s best product launches:

First Up: Sustainable Textiles From Sabai

Credit: Sabai

Sustainable furniture brand Sabai is now making all of its Recycled Velvets, Hemps, and Cactus Leathers available by the yard with their new Fabric By The Yard program. The new program was shaped by direct demand: customers were reaching out to Sabai because they wanted to reupholster furniture they already owned to match new Sabai pieces. Phantila, Sabai’s co-founder, adds: “It can be very difficult and expensive to get sustainable materials at small quantities…[there is] a very clear gap in the market, especially as we see consumer demand increasing for natural and nontoxic textiles.” With Fabric By The Yard, Sabai is hoping to close that gap by offering sustainable materials to both individual customers and trade clients that typically require a much larger commitment.

Trending: Design-Forward Outdoor Furniture

The fallout from Pamela Anderson’s internet-breaking Architectural Digest garden feature last summer continues: Anderson launched a collection of outdoor furniture this week with Olive Atelier called “The Sentimentalist.” I’ve written extensively for TQE about my love for Anderson’s personal style, and am thrilled that she’s bringing her understated elegance to a collection of garden furniture. In Pam’s words, the collection is “a little French, a little wild.” In other words: perfect. This marks the second celebrity-lead furniture collection inspired in part by a buzzy AD feature this month, following Emma Chamberlain’s West Elm collection that we covered last week.

Sustainable outdoor furniture brand Neighbor had several big launches in their Spring Collection this week, including the new Totem Chiminea and Take Two Collection. The Totem Chiminea is a modern, design-forward take on the iconic fireplaces of the ’60s and ’70s. Take Two is Neighbor’s most affordable collection yet, a similarly retro-inspired folding outdoor patio set designed for smaller spaces. Their spring collection also features updates to their take on the classic Adirondack chair, modern loungers, and a sculptural fire table.

Trending: Functional Totes

Fresh off the launch of their new Forma Bowler Bag, Cuyana has released an update to their popular Classic Easy Tote. For the first time, the Classic Easy Tote will include Cuyana’s signature system snaps, allowing it to integrate with their ecosystem of snap-in organizers and pouches, including the System Flap Bag, and System Zipper Pouch. They’re also introducing a new System Pocket Organizer alongside the tote, so it can flex between a clean, minimal carryall and something with more structure and organization when you need it.

Pelican is expanding its cooling and hydration lineup with the launch of the Dayventure Collection. This expansion introduces a versatile range of soft-shell coolers and high-performance hydration essentials. I particularly love the look of their new Dayventure Tote, a lightweight top-load cooler perfect for beach days and picnics. I’ve relied on Pelican’s hardshell gear cases to house all of my photo equipment for years, and am excited to test this new soft-shell line.

If you’re not familiar with their fragrances, this would be a great introduction.

The four piece capsule is made from recycled materials and combines Cotopaxi’s sustainably made, adventure-ready bags and accessories and FP Movement’s emphasis on versatile activewear that can be worn outside the workout studio.
