The Art of the Forever Buy: Ali LaBelle’s Favorite Purchases

Our team is dedicated to finding and telling you more about the web’s best products. If you purchase through our links, we may receive a commission. Our editorial team is independent and only endorses products we believe in.

In a world of micro-trends and next-day shipping, Ali LaBelle prefers the long game. The creative director behind the cult-favorite Substack À La Carte (and the woman responsible for many of our most saved design references) has built a career around thoughtful curation. Whether she’s shaping a brand identity, hosting a Pasta Girlfriend dinner, or obsessing over the perfect white tee, LaBelle gravitates toward objects that feel considered, enduring, and just a little bit classic.

Before The Receipts

TQE: For readers who may be new to À La Carte, how do you describe what you do and what originally pulled you toward Substack as a platform?

AL: It’s shockingly difficult to sum up what I do into a neat little package, but I’ll do my best! I’m a creative director—I work with brands to design their identities and create anything visual that tells their story, from photo art direction to packaging and a million things in between. I’ve worked with clients across interiors, food and beverage, hospitality, fashion, beauty… I’m so lucky, and I hope to do it forever.

I started À La Carte in 2023 because I was looking for a way to share all the things that I find inspiring—places, films, books, weird things I find at the flea market—beyond just an Instagram repost, but since then, it’s grown into a pretty popular design publication that ranges across a lot of different creative mediums and beyond. Beyond just being a fun place to exist—I’ve met so many interesting people through Substack!—it’s been a huge driver of creative growth for me; I never considered myself a writer, but in the last three years, I’ve really settled into the role.

So much so that I’m currently writing a book! On the side, I run a brand called Pasta Girlfriend—it mostly exists online, but we host dinners and parties in LA and New York for people who also love the intersection of food and aesthetics. The throughline between my creative work, À La Carte, and Pasta Girlfriend is that it’s all about creating experiences for people that are thoughtful and beautiful, even on a small scale. The book is really, most of all, about that, and all that goes into it. (Mark your calendars for fall 2027!)

TQE: What’s been lighting you up lately, professionally or personally, that feels especially representative of this season of your life?

AL: I love houses—in a parallel life, I’d be an interior designer—and in the last couple of weeks, I’ve toured two spectacular, architecturally significant properties here in LA: the Virginia Robinson estate and gardens in Beverly Hills and the Gamble House in Pasadena. I garner a lot of inspiration from old houses, even for my branding work, because they tell the story of the people who lived there long ago and the design decisions they made to specifically support the way they lived. All the details are unlike anything you’d see in a new build today—they literally just don’t make ‘em like they used to.

I spend a lot of time in my own home—I’m like, the ultimate homebody—and I’m always thinking about what makes a home comforting or energizing or welcoming or intimate… A lot of what I do, both professionally and personally, has to do with identifying that feeling and bringing it to fruition, whether through a brand or through a dinner party. Seeing these old homes always reminds me to go back to the classics.

TQE: You’re known for recommendations that feel thoughtful, not trendy. What does a product have to do to earn a permanent spot in your life?

AL: I tend to like things that feel like they’ve been the best, and will continue to be the best, for the rest of time. The things you’d find in your grandma’s medicine cabinet or your grandpa’s workshop. Stuff that feels like it was made specifically for this exact moment, usually in response to a trend, just doesn’t do it for me a lot of the time! So much of what’s out there is specifically designed to be impermanent, a transient, disposable thing in your life. I want the things I buy and keep around me to be items I’ll still want when I’m 50 or 70 or 100 years old, and a lot of what I recommend goes back to that.

What’s Worth Buying (And Rebuying)

“I am fully addicted to these incense, especially the Tuscon and Palais de Tokyo scents. I am really sensitive to smells and typically incense are too strong for me, but I was in the Bode store one day and found myself lingering near where they were burning Tuscon. I immediately drove down the street to Nickey Kehoe to buy a box and I’ve been a daily user since.”

“It’s so dry here in LA, and my skin is always desperate for a little midday spritz. I use this rosewater spray for everything—between skincare steps, after applying makeup, before bed… I literally keep multiple bottles around my house for easy access.”

“I’m particular about my knitwear (are you sensing a pattern?), and no one’s been able to top how much I love my sweaters from UK-based brand &Daughter. They hold shape and pill less easily than every one of my other sweaters, and I genuinely believe I’ll wear these until I die.”

Boxier Tubular Trash Tees

“I just counted and I’m up to seven of these boxy white tees. They’re the closest thing you’ll find to a lived-in, heavyweight vintage tee, and all of Everybody World’s tees are made from reclaimed waste cotton in LA, so they’re supply chain is generally more sustainable than your average garment. And they’re unisex! Can’t say enough good things.”

“You know how your grandma used to wear the same lipstick in the same shade for decades? That’s me with Lip Glow. While everyone else is lip combo-ing, I’m still slathering on the same glossy pink lip balm I’ve been wearing for, I don’t know, maybe 15 years? It’s hydrating, not too shiny, and in a shade that I’ll never quit.”

JAM

Wrapping Paper

“Another thing I’m obnoxiously picky about is gift wrap—I hate the plasticky-coated stuff you get from Target. JAM’s paper is dyed through, which means it isn’t printed on one side and white on the other, and it’s super thick, so it just looks fancy. I buy the ivory in bulk and wrap gifts in it all year round.”

“I picked these up at Salter House in New York a couple of years ago, and now anytime I see them at gift shops or boutiques, I grab another pack. How many times have you been like, I should include a quick note with this, or you realize you don’t have a card? I slip these into books I’m lending out, flowers I’m gifting, and packages I’m shipping allllll the time.”

“I’m not married, so for the holidays every year I ask for things people typically put on their registries—bedding, dishware, flatware… Two years ago I replaced all of my ceramic pots and pans with All-Clad and I’ll never, ever go back. (They are non-stick, you just have to learn how to use them! Look it up on TikTok, it’ll blow your mind.)”

“I typically wouldn’t buy the same shoe in multiple colors, but I’m up to three pairs of Mansur’s Dream Ballerina ballet flat—emerald green, robin’s egg blue, and burgundy. They’re just the perfect shape—a high vamp, super-soft leather, and a tiny tiny heel make them really comfortable for all-day wear. I’m not a huge wearer of color but these bring just enough of a pop to my outfits to make it seem like I’m more fun than I am.”
