Colostrum has had a meteoric rise over the past couple of years. It seems like everyone is talking about it. So, I’ll be the one to say it: I didn’t really understand what, exactly, it was. That’s why I’ve spent the past 3 months learning about it, testing a few brands, and evaluating how I feel.
If you've been seeing it everywhere and are also wondering whether it's worth your attention: the short answer is yes. But it’s worth understanding more before adding another powder to your cart.
After three months of testing Cowboy Colostrum, I'm convinced it's the one worth recommending. Here's what I’ve learned about the ingredient, and what makes Cowboy's version different from the others.
Back to the Basics: What Is Colostrum?

Colostrum is the first milk a mammal produces in the hours after giving birth. Naturally, then, it’s really nutrient dense. It's packed with antibodies, immunoglobulins, growth factors, lactoferrin, and bioactive proteins – all designed to jump-start a newborn's immune system, gut development, and tissue repair in the first days of life.
Humans have been using bovine colostrum for those same benefits for a very long time. Ayurvedic physicians prescribed it more than 2,000 years ago, and Scandinavian cultures have used it in traditional dishes for centuries. Newer clinical work is showing measurable benefits for gut lining repair, immune resilience, skin renewal, exercise recovery, and even hair growth.
From Cow to Powder
One of my first follow up questions was: what happens between mammal milk production and the proverbial Erewhon shelf?
Cows produce colostrum for the first few days after giving birth — calves get what they need first, and the surplus is collected from those early milkings. From there, brands use a gentle, low-heat processing to remove the water without damaging the antibodies and growth factors that make colostrum work in the first place.
The Clinical Results Behind The Hype

Cowboy ran a 12-week clinical study on adults taking two scoops daily. The results speak for themselves: 83% experienced improved gut health, 79% experienced clearer skin, and 66% experienced increased hair growth.
After three months on it, my experience lined up with those results. The bloating I'd come to view as normal settled, my skin looked noticeably brighter without any other change to my routine, and my hair (which had been shedding more than usual due to stress) started feeling thicker and shinier from root to tip.

Why Cowboy Specifically
All colostrum has to be dehydrated into powder, but many of the bigger names take it a step further and turn theirs into concentrates or isolates that strip out the fats, proteins, and full-spectrum bioactives. That makes them easier to shelf-stabilize and standardize, but it also strips out much of what made colostrum so effective in the first place.
Cowboy uses whole, first-day colostrum, collected from the very first milking after a cow gives birth, when antibodies, growth factors, and bioactives are at their most concentrated. Nothing is stripped out. The sourcing is also transparent in a way most competitors aren't: grass-fed cows on U.S. dairy farms, with clear disclosure about when and how the colostrum is collected.
The dosage matters, too. Cowboy provides three grams of colostrum per scoop, compared to roughly one gram in most competitor products.
The last piece (and honestly, the reason it's still on my counter) is that it genuinely tastes good. I tested the vanilla, sweetened with real vanilla bean rather than artificial flavoring. It mixes cleanly into yogurt, smoothies, and iced coffee without clumping. (Just don't add it to anything hotter than 100°F, or the heat will kill the bioactives.) It also comes in chocolate, strawberry, matcha, and unflavored.
The Verdict

Colostrum’s science is real – and Cowboy’s sourcing is transparent, dosing is meaningful, and the experience of actually taking it is good enough that you'll stick with it. And that’s how you’ll see its much-discussed benefits, like better gut health, brighter skin, and hair that finally feels fuller.
