In my humble opinion, fall is the best season for fashion. The sweaters! The denim! The boots! Every summer I patiently await the moment when temperatures drop just enough for me to pull out my fall favorites, but sometimes I’m a bit hasty. As much as I love dressing for fall, I find the transition from long, hot days filled with sunshine to the feeling of crisp wind and chilly evenings a little bit tricky— at least when it comes to getting dressed.

Transitional moments have never been my closet’s strong suit. This year, I was determined to change that. Lately I’d been hearing a lot about a new-to-me brand called Tuckernuck, but as it turns out the boutique-style retailer has been around for over a decade. When I took a closer look, I realized what a treasure trove of fashion I’d been missing out on. And, it occurred to me that Tuckernuck might hold the key to unlocking the transitional wardrobe of my dreams.

Tuckernuck carries both in-house labels and pieces from other designers, the end result of which is a highly curated, cohesive mix that is elegant and understated, more timeless than trendy. It’s a one-stop-shop for clothing, shoes, accessories, athletic attire, and— believe it or not— even gifts and home decor. Think everything from day dresses to dinner plates. So, I took it upon myself to give the online boutique a try, and I brought home some of my favorite pieces that I thought would help me bridge the gap between summer and fall. Spoiler alert: Tuckernuck is exactly what I never knew I needed, and I’m never looking back.

Jane Cashmere Hoodie in Navy

Tuckernuck may not be the first to do a cashmere hoodie, but they’re certainly among the best. I typically don’t wear much color in my wardrobe, and admittedly, navy isn’t exactly vibrant and adventurous, but considering most of my clothes are varying shades of black and beige — with the exception of the above shirdress — this hoodie felt like a nice change. It’s casual, but definitely more elevated than your standard hoodie fare, and it’s soft. Like, really soft. So far I’ve mostly worn it around the house working from home, but I am already envisioning myself wearing it during travel days and to laid back hangouts with friends. It’s the perfect mix of cozy and sophisticated.

Crepe Callahan Shirt Dress in Winetasting

I must confess that I am not usually one for dresses. But, every now and then I find one that I love, one I never want to take off, and from the moment I pulled on this gorgeous shirt dress I knew it was exactly that. I’m only 5 feet tall so I didn’t know how it would look on me compared to the model on the website, but I was pleasantly surprised: no matter where on the leg the hem falls, it still looks chic.

One common thread— pun intended— across all of Tuckernuck’s pieces is the quality and attention to detail, and this dress struck me as the perfect example of what sets the brand apart. The material doesn’t wrinkle, even while I spend half my day seated, and the ruffled part of the skirt is flowy without being puffy. I wore it without tights because it was still pretty warm out, and I styled it with my Margaux Ada ballet pumps, but you could totally add-in some warm tights and a peacoat on chillier days.

Jane Cashmere Pant in Navy

The only thing I love more than the cashmere hoodie is the matching pair of cashmere pants. I have an obsession with matching sets, partly because they always look so chic, and partly because they make getting dressed so much easier. This has become my go-to outfit for being put together when I have a string of back-to-back Zoom calls — even though the person on the other end of the call can’t see my full outfit, I can. Running errands in my head to toe cashmere set makes me feel incredibly fancy, even when I’m waiting in a seemingly endless line at Trader Joe’s. Just like the hoodie, the pants are delightfully soft and oh-so-cozy, and if I’m not careful I could see myself tempted to wear them to bed simply because I don’t want to take them off.

Knot Button Cashmere Cardigan in Gray

I am convinced that a lightweight cardigan is a transitional staple: you can wear it over tees, tanks, and dresses, with skirts and shorts, jeans and even trousers. Because the material isn’t too thick or chunky, it’s packable and portable, and I can even throw it in my bag if I’m out and I get a little too warm. I love this one from Tuckernuck because it's neutral enough to go with everything and its classic cut means it will never go out of style, making it more of an investment piece than a trendy splurge. Plus, I really appreciate the buttons, which match the rest of the piece as opposed to ones that are black, ivory, or tortoise, and the decorative detailing on them makes the cardigan feel a little bit dressier than it otherwise wood. I would wear this over a slip dress or to a wedding just as easily as I would to the movies.

Water Resistant Reversible Winston Jacket

My husband and I spend half our time in New York and half in Los Angeles, which means yet another curveball when it comes to transitioning from one season to the next: two different climates. When I’m in New York it can rain for days at a time, but it’s not always a heavy rain, and I still have to get wherever I’m going regardless of the weather. Plus, it’s not necessarily cold just because it’s raining, so that presents yet another issue. Enter this stunning reversible and water resistant coat that actually keeps me dry without making me look like a child on her way to school, as many raincoats tend to do. It’s mature and goes with nearly everything, and it almost makes me wish for rain just so I can wear it. Almost.

Nina Leather Flats in Black

Ballet flats are back in a big way, and I am a big fan of the way different brands are taking the style from the early aughts and updating it to feel more current. Tuckernuck has done exactly that with the Nina leather flats, which have a toe that isn’t quite round and isn’t quite pointed and an opening that is essentially the same. They’re also surprisingly comfortable, as ballet flats are a notoriously blister-causing style. They’re great with jeans, and allow you to show off some ankle without opting for a sandal, which feels way too summery. They’re a great all year-round shoe, so long as the weather warrants wearing them.

Dressing for transitional moments is easier when you put a little extra thought behind your choices, opting for fewer, more versatile pieces. Thanks to Tuckernuck, I’m all set to incorporate my new acquisitions into my existing wardrobe to make through the unpredictable days until summer fully gives way to fall.
