Growing up with the Pacific Ocean in my backyard, I have always been beach ready. For as long as I can remember, I’ve kept a beach bag chock-full of sunscreen, flip flops, a bikini or three, and my trusty Indian dyed beach blanket. When the weather was prime, which is nearly 365 days of the year, I was armed and ready. My blanket, covered in suntan oil, tarballs, and memories has long needed replacing. I’ve been hunting for the perfect replacement blanket that’s durable, affordable, and chic. Slowtide, a California based company, delivers high art designs made for the art of drying off.ᅠ

With an eye for detail, founders, friends, and beach lovers Dario Phillips, Kyle Spencer, and Wylie Von Tempsky set off to find the perfect dry-off solution. They’ve carefully crafted superior dry down products with everything in mind, from the weaving and looming of the fabric to the happiness of their manufacturers, down to the careful consideration of your personal experience.

If you’ve followed my TQE articles (like Dirty Labs and Oui The People), you’ll see a common thread making me do a jig: sustainability. Slowtide hits the high-water mark with its efforts on protecting our planet. They follow the guidelines of the Cotton LEADS Program, which ensures sustainably sourced cotton. Their polyester products are made using 100% recycled post-consumer waste, primarily plastic bottles. These poly-fibers are certified by the Global Recycled Standard. To top it off, Slowtide is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, which ensures that your dry-off accouterment is free of the top 100 toxic ingredients harmful to humans.

Slowtide is also dedicated to community outreach, education, and donation to facilitate positive change in the world. For example, they’ve collaborated with the Surfrider Foundation, organizing local community beach clean-ups.

Oh Sheet

During the pandemic, I’ve mastered creative ways to spend time outdoors, and I’ve taken my Slowtide blanket with me everywhere. I opted for the versatile, oversized, ultra-lightweight, River Blanket. It’s now my beach staple, but it’s also turned into my backyard yoga mat, my park picnic plop spot, and my shoulder wrap for midnight meteor shower viewing. The best part is its large size (66” x 80”) which makes for the perfect social distancing blanket!

Slowtide’s attention to detail is evident throughout, turning this beach blanket into the perfect luxury bed throw! The blanket has an intricately woven fringe, and there’s a beautiful leather label tightly sewn in one corner.

The Art Side

As conscientious as Slowtide is about their manufacturing process and the planet, they’re equally invested in the works of art printed on their threads. For instance, they’ve collaborated with famed Los Angeles based photographer and music video director, Estevan Oriol, transforming his iconic images into luxurious, transportable art.

The Ace Hotel printed a larger-than-life ice cube tray on their creation, inspired by a scorching hot poolside daze. Swimwear lines, Vitamin A, Tori Praver Swimwear, and Acacia all have had their ideas sewn in as well.

And if you’re all covered in the towel and blanket department, Slowtide collaborated with Steven Kenn and created an ink-black, Japanese inspired waffle robe. They’re lightweight and extra-absorbent, transforming your bathroom into a zen oasis.
