Inspired by her love of romance novels and her frustration with always-confident female leads, Averick set out to write the kind of main character she rarely saw represented. “I’m painfully anxious and not at all confident when it comes to dating,” she says. “I wanted to read about a character like that navigating the modern dating scene.” The result is Phoebe: a hopeless romantic rapidly approaching thirty while unpacking intimacy, anxiety, and the pressure to hit life milestones on schedule. “It’s a number that’s scared me for a long time,” Averick shares about turning thirty alongside her character. “Writing this novel was my way of coming to terms with it.”
