The conversation around pregnancy has shifted – and, in many ways, only just begun – over the past few years. Topics like fertility and the reality of the fourth trimester were once largely hush-hush. Now, they’re openly discussed in everyday conversations, TikTok videos, and increasingly, in the media. BUMPSUIT founder Nicole Trunfio has played an instrumental role in pushing that dialogue forward.
What began as a way to get herself dressed during pregnancy quickly took on a life of its own. The original BUMPSUIT has sold out countless times – and the brand has since expanded into dresses, shapewear, loungewear, and postpartum essentials loved by everyone from Miranda Kerr to Jasmine Tookes and Lauryn Bosstick. I asked Trunfio about BUMPSUIT’s past, present, and future. Here’s what she shared.

How would you describe BUMPSUIT in one sentence?
BUMPSUIT is the brand that embodies every aspect of modern day motherhood, throughout pregnancy, to postpartum and beyond.
Can you share the story behind the brand?

I came up with the concept after my own struggle to find an essential, fool-proof, base layer that I could wear as a daily uniform throughout my pregnancy and use to style with my current wardrobe at the time. I was a pregnant mom of two, building a different business, my husband was away most of the time and I didn’t have much help so I needed to keep things simple and efficient while still looking chic and comfortable.
In the beginning, I made what is now called a BUMPSUIT for myself. I made one for every day of the week, and just felt so great going from the office to school pickup to date night. I even slept in it on occasions where I was just too exhausted, and just woke up the next day with a new accessory plan, same (what is now a) Bumpsuit, so no one knew. So many people commented on how chic and put together I was (little did they know).
This double-lined, 4 way stretch bodysuit had really changed my perspective on daily dressing during maternity months, and my mood in a good way during all those challenging trimesters. Towards the end, a friend said, “you look so good, you feel so good, why are you being selfish and keeping this all to yourself, women need this”….. after that day, I went home and trademarked the name BUMPSUIT and we were on our way. And it was written.
Since then, we have sold out so many times I have lost count, created the viral and well loved Armadillo Baby Carrier, changed lives with our support belly band, and given our community the biggest hug of them all with our cloud collection. There is so much more to come, we just launched THE GOODS, a postpartum care package for the 4th trimester (the one everyone seems to forget about) and we are opening up to many more categories in 2026, to really build our our vision of the motherhood journey, and bringing beautiful curated products into the space.
How do you think the conversation around pregnancy has changed in recent years?
I love how openly these conversations are happening now. What were once hard, taboo topics can finally be discussed freely. Women feel empowered around pregnancy — unafraid to show it, to own it. It wasn’t always like this.
I was just at a wedding with a friend who is six months postpartum and breastfeeding. Her dress looked amazing and I totally thought it was from Norma Kamali. She was so excited to tell me it was from BUMPSUIT – that she had bought it when pregnant, and has continued to get so much wear out of it. So, with that in mind, I’m curious: what is your process for creating garments that truly grow and change with the women who wear them?
I love this, a real life experience that really speaks to what the brand is about. We do actually fit all of our garments on a pregnant and non pregnant model during our development process, it’s essential. The BUMPSUIT is something you can wear pregnant or not. It's a non-maternity, maternity unicorn product, making it a solid wardrobe investment. We wanted to continue the wearability during pregnancy and beyond across all apparel styles, so even a baby shower or a denim look can be worn long after pregnancy. It really makes you look at the collection on offer in a different way, and want to buy more.
I am a core essentials girl at heart, I love timeless pieces you can wear 10 years down the line and pass down. We make sure all of our styles pass this test. Separately, we have a whole community of never-been-pregnant women, that live in our styles: the jumpsuits, the cloud collection, our active wear, and the support belly band is actually an essential for flying (our whole team wear it whenever we fly to stop bloating and keep us feeling fresh). We do a lot of R&D and customization with fabrics, we definitely invest our time heavily here. I want women to feel like all the pieces they buy from us are forever pieces. We pride ourselves in quality and each item having a timeless appeal.
What has the reception of BUMPSUIT been like? Is there any feedback that’s stuck with you, anything that changed or validated the direction of the brand?

It’s been incredible. We are still in the growing phase so we really rely on word of mouth and organic real love for the brand. Our collaborations with Miranda Kerr, Jasmine Tookes, Lauryn Bosstick, and Rumer Willis were born out of their pure love of the brand and wearing it all throughout their pregnancies.
Most recently, we got the most humbling shout out from Hailey (Beiber), who named the BUMPSUIT Armadillo baby carrier, our Cloud Loungewear PJ’s and our Velcro Belly Band as her “can’t live without” products – 3 mentions, 3 different categories. That was everything to me, knowing she must get sent so many incredible products and has tried them all, was a big moment for us. It's nice to be acknowledged by someone with such great taste, and in an authentic, organic way. Shout out to HB!
THE GOODS aims to support the fourth trimester — a period that still feels under-discussed in 2025. Why was this category so important for you to build? And how did you bring it to life?
My mission is to empower women and amplify their voices. I feel like PP is such a hard time, and I wanted to bring a bit of humor to cut through the discomfort. We worked really hard on making sure every item in that kit is user friendly, high quality, a PP necessity and will make her smile, even just a little bit. I think to know our products can bring some joy to a mom’s life, especially a new mom experiencing everything for the first time, is why I do this. We want to lift our community up by any means possible. I didn't have products like these when I had my 3 babies – I know what’s missing from the market, and we are here to solve that.

You’ve expanded beyond the original suit into shapewear, dresses, and postpartum essentials. What’s exciting you next?
Oh baby, beauty! It's been so fun developing beauty, and really innovating in such a busy space. I can’t tell you how excited I am for 2026 and our foray into the world of beauty. We have some exciting products on deck. I can't wait to bring them to market.
You have a lot on your plate as a mother, entrepreneur, and model. What does a “typical,” day look like for you (if such a thing exists)?
They do, and I actually love how typical they are. From the days of being in 3 different cities in 1 day, shooting Italian Vogue, a Campaign with Patick Demarchilier and an editorial for Bazaar, it's refreshing to know my week ahead.
I have had such a crazy life thus far, sometimes I feel like I have lived so many lives. But to land in a place with consistency, where I am always working towards something, whether it's a new product, collab, campaign or deal. I have a routine now… it feels super nice for the moment. I am not sure how long it will last, but for now, I like it here. My kids keep me on my toes, our ranch is our forever work in progress, and the business is beautiful. I love to sneak off for a day or two and see my husband on tour, and when I can sneak in some cooking or baking, that's my therapy. I can’t complain.
In closing, what’s one piece of advice you would give to women in any stage of pregnancy or early motherhood – something you wish someone had said to you?
You’re doing great.
