I was working as a makeup artist when I had a future bride call me up in a panic to ask if there was any way I could create a beauty look for her big day. I replied of course, but she went on to explain all the bad experiences she had had with different brands: breakouts, teary eyes, rashes – nothing seemed to work for her. She eventually stopped wearing makeup about 10 years ago. One bad reaction to cosmetics can be enough to put anyone off for life, but I knew sensitive skin was such a common problem that there had to be a solution. I learned about it through a chance encounter with a dermatologist who suggested I check out Physicians Formula.
Having worked as a makeup artist and beauty journalist for over 15 years, I am always a little skeptical about brands’ claims, so I was fascinated to discover that Physicians Formula had actually been founded in 1937 in Los Angeles by a leading allergist Dr. Crandall out of love for his wife who had extremely sensitive skin and was unable to wear lipstick. Long before “clean beauty” was a marketing buzzword, Physicians Formula was creating fragrance and paraben-free products using minimal ingredients.
In 2018, in order to continue to develop products approved by medical professionals, they formed the Physicians Coalition consisting of leading allergists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, and plastic surgeons. Continuing their commitment to creating high quality hypoallergenic makeup, the brand now has a list of over 500 harsh chemicals they refuse to ever include in their products. This combined with their dedication to using natural and organic ingredients results in gentle yet effective makeup products ranging from eyeshadows to skincare, safe to use for anyone who suffers from sensitive skin.
The brand is also extremely affordable with lipsticks starting at about $6 and most products – even the palettes – coming in at under $20. Ever since that first bride, I have kept a selection of their products in my kit ever-ready for any potential client with a delicate complexion and have so far only had positive results.
Whether you are looking to create a sultry smokey eye or a statement red lip, here are some of the essential picks from their collection to help you achieve any makeup look without the risk of irritation.
Made for Sensitive Eyes
Butter Believe It! Eyeshadow – Bronzed Nudes
Even a gust of wind can make sensitive eyes start to stream with tears. So for those with delicate skin, the thought of wearing shadows can often invoke nothing but an image of a makeup disaster. A quick look at the ingredient list for these nude palettes will soon put all your fears at ease.
In place of strong chemicals, Physicians Formula went to the Amazon and formulated these palettes to include essential fatty acids and pro-vitamins along with monoi, murumuru, cupuacu, and tucuma butter, all of which add hydration and calm the skin. Both the shimmer and matte shadows have a smooth texture that glides onto the eyelids easily. Perfect for creating an all out smokey eye for nighttime or a no make up makeup for daytime.

The Essence Of Healthy Toner & Setting Spray
This 2-in-1 spray works to both moisturize and condition the skin while also setting makeup to make it last longer. To improve the natural radiance of skin, it is formulated with galactomyces ferment filtrate, a natural hydrator loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. A light spritz before applying your foundation soothes and de-puffs the skin while a second spray once you have completed your makeup locks in the products so they won’t budge or smudge for hours.

The Perfect Matcha 3-in-1 Melting Cleansing Balm
Beauty rule number 1 is always always take off your makeup. The most important step in creating a flawless base isn’t in the foundation you use but actually in how well you take care of your skin. Avoid breakouts and clogged pores with this cleansing balm that melts into the skin and softly but effectively removes any product or dirt. Containing the holy trinity of antioxidants – matcha green tea, bamboo shoot, and lotus extract – this balm leaves your skin soft, supple and hydrated.
