Charm jewelry has always played a big role in my life. As a kid, my grandparents spent half the year traveling the country to sell their car-themed jewelry at car shows. My mom, a talented artist, used to draw the antique cars that grandma and grandpa requested, and those drawings became beautiful gold and silver charms that hung off of earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more.
Today, my older sister (who’s also my best friend) is a jewelry designer. We’re always on the hunt for the next greatest piece to pair with our new thrifted outfit. My latest obsession? Mod + Jo, a small-batch jewelry brand that emphases quality and affordability without sacrificing style. Their pieces are designed to add flair to your everyday looks, but they’re also super versatile and designed not to tarnish over time.
As someone who thrives on change — but also appreciates ease and reliability — I was excited to try a few pieces from a jewelry brand made just for people like me. Here’s my honest review.
We like
- Cute, thoughtful designs that feel fresh and approachable, but not basic
- Emphasis on quality, with a luxurious look, but at an affordable price point
- Durable, long-lasting plating technology that’s 5x stronger than average
- Versatility across the collection
We don't like
- The spacers on the paracord necklace were hard to clasp fully closed at times. It could’ve been user error, but my charm fell off of the necklace on multiple occasions, making me wonder if a different clasp design from Mod + Jo might work a little better.
Tommy Paracord Necklace
The Tommy Cord necklace comes in a variety of colors, but I went with pink for a color that goes with everything. It’s easy to mix and match different charms, which can be added and removed in a breeze.
I also love that I can adjust the length of the necklace. It’s a major pet peeve when my necklace hits right at the neckline of my shirt, so instead of having to change outfits or jewelry, I can just make the cord necklace longer or shorter for the perfect look.
Liam Watch Chain Necklace
If there’s one thing I learned from my family of jewelry makers, it’s this: Every girl needs to have a go-to.
The Liam Watch Chain Necklace has become exactly that — when I want to feel more pulled together but I don’t have the time or energy for a full-on outfit ensemble, this necklace has my back. It even looks cute with athleisure clothes and exercise dresses for busy errand days.
I also appreciate the clasp, because it’s easy to pull on and take off in a pinch. You can hook the clasp to different points along the chain, creating different looks and lengths with a variety of charms. Most of all, this chain has a vintage-y, timeless feel — grandma and grandpa definitely would’ve approved.
Andy Gemstone Enhancer Chain
I’m not lying when I say I get compliments every time I wear the Andy Gemstone Enhancer Chain in public. I’ve even gotten compliments on Zoom calls, which, of course, just makes me want to wear this necklace even more.
I’m not exactly a maximalist, but I’m also bored by the ultra-minimalist chains that everyone seems to be wearing. I want something that makes a statement, stands out, and feels different from what all the other girlies have. (Plus, how insanely cute are the fish?!).
What I love most about it: I can throw it on with a more basic outfit, like a solid colored dress, and it immediately elevates my look with color and style. She’s perfect — literally, no notes.
