Have you ever met a tea that made you want to be a better person? Well, Magic Hour Tea—aka the most whimsical, gorgeous, stunning, magical, [insert ethereal adjective here] tea of the season—reinvigorated my need for a ceremonial practice in my life. Which is saying something, considering I’m a Virgo woman who already loves rituals and routines.

Plain and simply, founder and tea witch Zhena Muzyka is doing tea differently. In combining her herbal medicine and aromatherapy backgrounds with her deep passion for nature and the rituals that surround it, she continues to craft custom-made tea blends that will open all of your chakras. The packaging alone will leave you death-dropped on the floor.

I got to try four of their Cosmic Garden Iced Teas (don’t you love how that sounds?), so I got to steep myself in their aromatic, spell-binding concoctions. I’ll tell you everything below, but just know that I’m no longer who I once was.

We like

  • Organic, thoughtfully sourced ingredients
  • Synergistic herbal combinations
  • Surprising, defined flavor
  • Stunning packaging
  • Literally the tea gets reiki (read on below)

THE MOST MAGICAL HOUR

I’ve always been a bit of a #TeaGirlie. As someone who was born and bred in Los Angeles, it felt like a social imperative to know the names of herbs, botanicals, and adaptogens by my later adolescence. However, as I’ve gotten older, the sourcing and quality of the teas I drink has become a more prevalent priority in my health regimen. Enter: Magic Hour.

Zhena has been in the tea game for over two decades. In fact, some might even call her a Tea Pioneer, considering she was able to get Fair Trade teas into large grocery store chains like Walmart and Kroger for the first time ever. So it’s no wonder that as she evolved (or as women do, transformed) she wanted to “reconnect with the poetry and purpose of tea, which is a spiritual practice.

Magic Hour is, in short, the antidote to commoditized tea. Its beauty and process demand a ceremonial “vibe” that is anything but commercial or rushed. Now, before you go stressing about how to properly perform a tea ceremony, Zhena would request that you just chill for a second (or an hour). The act of slowing down and returning to a state of self-awareness, self-reflection, and self-care “is simple and yet has profound spiritual and wellness benefits.”

All the reasons we’re obsessed:

+ Zhena’s Blending Process

Every single ingredient has been chosen for its synergistic effect on one's health and wellbeing. Zhena’s formulas, which she literally dreams up, are made up of flower, tea, herb, spice, adaptogen, and essential oil in combinations she designs to be “endless and thrilling.” Plus she infuses the blends with Reiki and prayer, which is like, so high vibrations, I can’t even.

+ Biodynamic Sourcing

Everything, and we mean everything in Magic Hour’s teas, is organic and biodynamic. Zhena sources the majority of her ingredients from small farmers in Sri Lanka, India, Africa, China and Japan. Bonus fact: The base of most of her blends is from a Sri Lankan tea garden where she was married, so she is deeply committed to its health and maintenance.

+ Spirituality and Wellness

Magic Hour was founded to create a community around the mindful practice of tea ceremonies from ancient cultures, aimed to empower women with the wellness benefits of taking time for a mindful cup of tea “at sunrise and sunset, which is when we remember the quiet preciousness and passing of our daily lives.” *Adds Tea at Dawn and Dusk to calendar*

THE COSMIC COLLECTION

When I received my Cosmic Tea Garden, I was so bewitched by my sampling jars that I didn’t even want to open them. “But they’re too pretty!!!” I screamed to no one.

What makes Magic Hour’s Cosmic Garden Teas so special is that they: 1) are meant to be enjoyed iced, 2) can even be cold-steeped so you can achieve a tannin-free flavor profile, and 3) leverage cooling herbs and ingredients to keep your holistic constitution in balance as the earth sets on fire (weird times right now!)

Zhena mentioned that she didn’t use tea leaves typical of iced teas, instead  going all in on Jasmine Pearls, Silver Needle White and other full-leaf, super-premium teas that would otherwise be kept for special occasions. She also added in a ton of freeze-dried organic fruit and extra-soothing, enriching flowers for the ultimate cooling effect.

Different from Magic Hour’s hot-brewed teas that typically only take three-to-five minutes to brew, these iced infusions require about an hour of steeping (they provide adorable tea sachets for the process) to get the full flavor and herbal benefits.

Can a tea be creamy….with no cream involved? Turns out it can.

When I opened the jar to the Butterfly Blue Coconut Cream ($55), I was transported to some kind of tropical beach location where all I did was drink frozen drinks all day and forget that I had ever had a job. With a cooling white tea base, this divine combination includes literal freeze-dried bananas (that you can see in your brew), butterfly pea flower, and dessicated coconut. Even more fun was the clean blue color that started to infuse post-brewing, making it a total crowd-pleaser and a perfect afternoon pick-me-up (but make it calming). I’m genuinely opening and closing the bottle for a quick whiff as we speak.

Passionfruit Green With Roses

Queen Rose, come throuuuuggggh. As the ultimate mood-lifter and metabolism speeder-upper, this green-tea-based infusion is the Royal Highness of iced teas. Freeze-dried blueberries: check. Goji berries: check. Rose petals: check. Stunning flavor: check, check, check.

With the Passionfruit Green With Roses ($55), I followed one of  Zhena’s “cold tips” for the ultimate iced preparation: making tea ice cubes. By transforming this hella-fragrant tea into ice cubes, it helped me avoid any watered down flavor by doubling up on double coolness and tea-ness.

Strawberry Shortcake With Hibiscus

I imagine the song “Strawberry Fields Forever” was written knowing that Strawberry Shortcake With Hibiscus ($55) would one day exist.

The first thing I noticed when I opened this flavor capsule was a huge chunk of freeze-dried strawberry (organic, of course). “Well, this is going well,” I thought. With a balanced mix of green and white tea, this simple, flavorful, antioxidant-rich infusion carries with it a ton of wellness benefits that aid in heart health and immune support. As someone who typically avoids caffeine, I found it interesting that this tea (alongside all the rest) did not make me feel buzzed ever.

Lemon Meringue Puerh

My Chinese Medicine Doctor and I have been gabbing about puerh tea for years now. TL;DR: Puerh is a black tea that dates back to ancient China, boasting a ton of antioxidants and a unique "post-fermentation" that gives it smokiness and funk.

Magic Hour’s Lemon Meringue Puerh ($55) made me feel some type of way. With heavy lemony notes, this black tea made me feel super alert and super calm at the very same time (hey, calendula flowers!). When I was feeling super sassy, I’d add some sparkling water to this mix to make it feel like I was having my very own Magic Happy Hour. It couldn't have been more different than the other blends, in a way that felt refreshing.

ICE, ICE, BABY

Magic Hour knows what it’s doing in coming up with teas that are both zeitgeist-relevant as well as anciently adorned. Not many brands can balance both of those things as gracefully as Zhena has managed to in her intoxicating brews (she even has an astrology collection!)

There’s a saying in often spoken in Japanese tea ceremonies: "Ichi-go Ichi-e", which means “each moment only occurs once.” Zhena wants to remind people through the simple ritual of tea to remember to live as if each and every moment mattered. “Because it does,” she says..
