My sister, who’s getting married in three months and deep in her prep game, recently texted to let me know: “I swear ever since I started using a red light face mask my skin has been so much better.” We’ve both struggled with acne from teenhood into adulthood. At thirty, I often joke that it’s not fair that I’m not dealing with both acne and wrinkles at the same time – they should at least trade off.

Enthused by her success – and intrigued by the potential benefits for redness, blemishes, and brightness – I kicked off a search for a red light therapy mask that could deliver real results for my myriad skin concerns, too.

TL;DR: My research led me to iRestore's Illumina Face Mask, which packs in significantly more diodes than leading competitors like CurrentBody and Dr. Dennis Gross, has clinical study results to back it up, and comes from a brand trusted by over 600,000 customers. The world of red light therapy is vast (and sometimes confusing), so if you’re considering investing in a mask of your own, here’s what I learned — and why iRestore ultimately won me over.

Some Background on Red Light Therapy

There has been a lot of buzz around red light therapy over the past few years, and I was hesitant to fully lean in without first consulting the science. As a wellness editor, I have seen too many products leverage trending ingredients or buzzwords in my day.

Red light therapy (also known as photobiomodulation) uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate the skin and stimulate activity within your cells. The science gets complicated, but the basic idea is that this light is absorbed by the mitochondria, which may help cells function more efficiently.

For skin specifically, research suggests red light may help reduce inflammation and support fibroblast activity and collagen production, which explains why it’s become popular for concerns ranging from redness and blemishes to fine lines, texture, and overall skin rejuvenation. In short, it gives your skin’s natural repair processes a boost, and there’s a healthy amount of science to back it up.

Beyond skin, photobiomodulation has also been studied for applications including hair growth, pain and inflammation, and muscle recovery.

What to Consider When Researching Devices

All red light products are not created equal. I quickly learned that there are a handful of factors worth paying attention to:

  • Wavelengths: Usually measured in nanometers (nm), different wavelengths penetrate tissue to different depths and may serve different purposes, which is why many devices combine red and near-infrared light rather than relying on a single wavelength. For facial skin, red light in roughly the 630–660nm range is commonly used for skin rejuvenation, while near-infrared wavelengths reach deeper into tissue.
  • Power and dose: More powerful isn’t necessarily better. What matters is whether a device delivers an appropriate amount of light energy to your skin over the course of a treatment. You may see brands list “irradiance,” which essentially tells you how much light energy reaches a given area at a given moment. Treatment time matters here, too: intensity and duration work together to determine the total dose.
  • Coverage: A mask can have impressive specs on paper but still leave areas of your face underserved. I looked at the number and placement of LEDs or diodes, how evenly they covered the face, and whether the mask actually sat close enough to my skin to deliver light consistently.
  • Clinical testing: This was a big one for me. Red light therapy as a category has research behind it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean every device on the market has been proven to deliver the same results.
  • Consistency: Finally, even the most technically impressive mask isn’t going to do much sitting in a drawer. Treatment times, recommended frequency, comfort, fit, and whether you can actually move around while wearing it all matter. I wanted something effective, yes, but also something realistic enough to become part of my routine.

How I Landed on iRestore

The brand wowed me across the board. The cordless Illumina Face Mask packs in 360 medical-grade LEDs and three wavelengths — red (635nm), near-infrared (830nm), and blue (415nm) — which can be used individually or simultaneously depending on your skin goals. Those 360 LEDs also amount to 1.5x the diodes of CurrentBody's current flagship Series 2 (236) and more than 2x those of Dr. Dennis Gross (160), allowing for densely packed, full-face coverage.

On top of that, in its clinical studies, over 90% of participants experienced a noticeable reduction in wrinkle depth and skin roughness; 91% reported improved skin tone (with 82% seeing enhanced smoothness after 12 weeks); and some users saw an 83% reduction in acne breakouts after 8 weeks of use. Plus, it’s IEC Safety Tested and ISO Quality Assured.

It has hundreds of five-star reviews, with users raving about things like “I'm seeing a difference in the glow of my skin,” and “The blue light helped blemishes right away.”

And the last piece is an important one, because if you don’t use the mask consistently, the technology doesn’t really matter. Illumina is lightweight and breathable, with integrated eye shields and a MagSafe-inspired power cable that make it easy to multitask through the recommended 10-minute sessions, 3–5 times per week.

The Mask I’m Betting On

It’s rare for brands to earn top marks across so many crucial categories, which is why I felt comfortable trying out red light therapy with iRestore. I’m still in the early days, so I’ll report back once I’ve had enough time to judge my own results. But based on the specs, clinical testing, and sheer ease of working it into my routine, Illumina checked more of my boxes than any other mask I researched.‍
