As a fashion editor based in NYC, I was boots on the ground for New York Fashion Week. And with London and Milan in full swing and Paris quickly approaching, I’ve been studying the runways like it’s my job—because it is.
While the collections hitting the runways are technically showing us Spring/Summer 2027, I’ve noticed something particularly exciting this season. Several of the biggest trends we saw for next spring are already showing up in the fall fashion conversation.
In other words, we don’t have to wait six months to try them out… I certainly didn’t. From statement-making belts to electric purple and fringe, these are the fashion month trends I’m seeing everywhere, and exactly how I’m incorporating them into my wardrobe pre-SS27.
Belts Don’t Have to Be Boring
Belts are no longer just functional. This season, designers and tastemakers are getting creative with how they use them to break up an outfit and add another layer of personality.
On the runways, we saw fringe and draped belts at Di Petsa, double belts at Lovebirds, and tie belts at Patrick McDowell and Talia Byre. Cummerbunds are also having a major moment, spotted at Campillo, Kallmeyer, Conner Ives, TWP, and many more. The best part of this trend is that it’s an easy way to take your capsule wardrobe and immediately make it fashion forward.
Tibi and Coach both showed sweaters, blazers, and button-downs tied around the waist. I decided to try the styling trick myself for two workdays, and I was sold. It instantly broke up my outfit and made even my wardrobe staples feel more intentionally styled.
How to wear it now: Take your favorite blazer, button-down, or lightweight sweater and tie it around your waist. For an extra pop, I love adding this red knit shrug from Evereve to tap into another major color trend we’ve been seeing this season.
Purple, Purple, Purple
I’ll admit it: I used to hate purple. But after seeing designers do it this well throughout fashion month, I’m officially a believer.
Burberry played with deeper purple outerwear. Colleen Allen showed vibrant sheer separates. While Edeline Lee, Simone Rocha, Sandy Liang, and Prabal Gurung all played with light hues. What makes this trend particularly wearable is that the color is evolving. The more electric shades we’re seeing for fall feel bold and unexpected, while the softer lavender and lilac tones are carrying the idea straight into spring.

Have Fun With Fringe
One of the most fun trends we’ve spotted so far this month, designers Heirloom, Carolina Herrera, Fforme, Ulla Johnson, Tibi, and Conner Ives are showing fringe across skirts, tops, jackets, dresses, and accessories.
For SS27, the trend is taking on a particularly vibrant, resort-ready feel. But you absolutely don’t need to wait until spring to try it. Right now, fringe fits perfectly into the western-inspired styling we’ve been seeing everywhere.
How to wear it now: Try suede jackets, fringe-trimmed bags, boots, and other textured accessories that give the trend a fall-friendly feel.

Plaid Isn’t Just for Fall
Plaid is obviously a fall wardrobe staple, but what caught my attention this season is how the pattern is continuing into SS27. Instead of feeling like a strictly seasonal print, it’s being styled in ways that feel unexpected. The pattern was everywhere during fashion month, particularly on the street style scene, while designers including Prada and Collina Strada incorporated it into their collections.

Experimenting With Dropwaist
Designers including Lovebirds, Erdem, Keburia, and Tibi are experimenting with dropped waistlines through the construction of a dress, the placement of a belt, and the overall proportions of the look. What we love about this season’s dropwaist looks is that you don’t necessarily need to buy a dropwaist dress to try the trend. Look for longer, lower-rise skirts or dresses and experiment with the placement of your belt.
