Some people live for summer beach days, and others jump for joy at the first sign of spring. Not I. All year-long I bide my time, waiting for fall. It’s not because of the leaves changing color nor Halloween, and it’s got nothing to do with Thanksgiving or hot apple cider or pumpkin spice lattes. The reason I love fall is because the sweaters.

Sure, I wear my sweaters in the wintertime, but they’re usually hidden beneath a warm jacket (which, mind you, I also love). Fall is the one season that allows me to show off my sweater collection in all of its glory, every cotton and wool and cashmere stitch. To wear a beautiful, high-quality sweater is like wearing a perfectly tailored blanket, and it’s difficult for me to imagine anything better than being cozy and warm while feeling the crisp, cool air on my face, rustling through my hair. It’s simply sublime.

Over the years – and based on precisely zero measurable criteria – I’ve come to think of myself as a sweater connoisseur. My collection, the result of seasons upon seasons of careful curation, has become a source of great pride, and every time I think I’ve perfected it I find a new, equally flawless sweater to add to the lineup. And now, fall has finally arrived and I am absolutely living for every chance I get to wear them and style them and feel cute and snug and chic. Without further ado, here is the lineup I simply cannot live without this delightfully chilly fall season.

Misha & Puff

The newest addition to my closet, Misha & Puff’s Fisherman Crew Pullover is elegant and flattering, classic but somehow totally on trend. The billowy sleeves are what initially grabbed my attention, but it’s the way the waist gives the sweater structure despite its slightly oversized silhouette that had me chomping at the bit to wear it. Made entirely of Pima cotton, it’s soft to the touch and I never want to take it off.

Jenni Kayne

It was Jenni Kaye that first opened the floodgates for my sweater obsession. I have a few pieces from the brand, some that I’ve had for 6 years and counting, but my current favorite is this oversized crew neck, which can’t help but look sophisticated no matter how I style it. I love wearing a white crewneck tee under it for the little pop of white around the neckline, and it goes with literally everything – from jeans to over dresses, and even shorts.

Naked Cashmere

Michaela Brushed Cashmere Cardigan in Peony

Some years ago, my best friend put me on to Naked Cashmere, and my life has never been the same. All of the brand’s sweaters are amazing, but when it comes to brushed cashmere, Naked Cashmere reigns supreme. Truly, I’d never felt anything like it. The Michaela cardigan is so versatile, and though I’m breaking it out for fall, I’ll likely keep wearing it well into the spring.

Trovata

Kate Sweater in Grey

$418

The moment I laid eyes on the Kate sweater’s scalloped neckline I knew I needed to have it. Trovata is one of my favorite brands, and this sweater serves as further proof as to why: the attention to detail is unmatched. The sweater is beautifully made from delicate cashmere, and it’s very lightweight, so it’s perfect for layering. It’s definitely the dressiest sweater in my collection, and I tend to save it for special occasions.

Tuckernuck

Jane Cashmere Hoodie in Navy

I love hoodies, and I love cashmere, so suffice it to say, I really love this cashmere hoodie from Tuckernuck. Navy is one of my favorite colors of the moment, and it just so happens to be the only navy sweater I own, so it’s been getting a lot of wear. It’s mature, but still casual, and I can wear it just as easily when I am out and about as I can one a lazy, rainy day indoors.

babaa

Jumper No15 in Dark Mist

My husband bought me this gorgeous pure wool sweater from babaa for my 30th birthday, and it is without a doubt the warmest piece of clothing I own, short of a coat or parka. It’s thick and chunky, and though undyed wool is a little bit scratchy at first but it softens up with wear. All of babaa’s sweaters are ethically made from local wool, and the sheep are well cared-for, which gives me peace of mind while wearing my beloved no 15. I pull this roomy mockneck out on the chilliest days, usually with a tee or long sleeve shirt underneath.

Cozy Earth

Oversized Classic Cardigan in Black

With this oversized cardigan, Cozy Earth most definitely lives up to its name. It’s so incredibly soft that I am often tempted to wear it to bed. I love putting it on over an oversized tee after I get out of the shower because it’s just that… well… cozy. On slightly warmer days I style it with a midi-length silk shirt and ballet flats, but on chilly days I like wearing a fitted turtleneck underneath.

525

Ada Cotton Tipped Turtleneck Sweater in Black / Sea Salt

$198

The only sweater on this list that I don’t already own, the Ada sweater from 525 is the object of my online shopping affections at the moment. I have another sweater from 525, a black cotton fisherman sweater that I lived in last winter. I am drawn to the drapey, almost cape-like cut, not to mention the subtle detailing of the two-tone sleeves. It has the potential to be dressy, like it would pair just as easily with trousers as jeans or even leggings. Plus, the turtleneck speaks for itself.  I’ve got my eye on this sweater, if not for this season, definitely for next.

The truth is, I feel most comfortable in my own skin, like the most authentic version of myself, when I’m wearing a soft, cozy sweater. After all, I think that’s the point of fashion — to bring forth our truest inner self, to make it so our outsides give us the confidence to be who we are inside. And so, I’ll spend the rest of the year revelling in the divine freedom of wearing all of my classic, neutral, mostly oversized sweaters. If sweaters happen to be your favorite too, I hope you’ll do the same.
