My best friend is one of those people who’s always in the know about what’s trending around town here in Los Angeles. As an event planner and tablescape connoisseur, she has an innate eye for design — especially when it comes to discovering local brands(@casanovadarling, if you want the scoop). Naturally, she’s an exceptional gift giver.
So when my now-husband and I moved into our Echo Park apartment ten years ago, she showed up with a set of printed napkins from Block Shop Textiles — a sister-founded LA textile studio known for its bold, handmade block prints. At the time, I just thought they were beautiful. I didn’t realize they’d spark a decade-long brand crush.
That small housewarming gift slowly grew into a collection. As Block Shop expanded its offerings, I kept bringing more of it into my home — a curtain panel for the front door, throw pillows to perk up my lumpy sofa, and a small fortune of bandanas and scarves. Meanwhile, the brand evolved too, opening a gorgeously designed retail space in Atwater Village and building out an impressively robust online presence.
These days, it’s my go-to for thoughtful gifts — and the “just because” treats for myself when I’m feeling a little shoppy (which is more often than I care to admit). But Block Shop isn’t just a beautiful store or colorful home decor; it’s an intimate design house rooted in sisterhood and sustained by global craft partnerships. That human quality is felt in every piece, from subtle ink variations to the eventual broken-in softness that only comes with use over time. And their commitment to liveable craft is what started it all.
Why Editors Love Block Shop Textiles
- Hand block printed by long-term artisan partners in Jaipur
- Artful home decor that’s meant to be lived with
- Bold color palettes with an art history background
- A whimsical LA storefront that doubles as a community space

The Sisterly Beginnings of Block Shop
Before there was a storefront or cult-favorite robe, there were sisters learning block printing in India — the foundation of the brand. “As artists, we’ve always been drawn to specialized art forms and their histories, from block printing to weaving,” co-founder Hopie Hill tells me. After apprenticing abroad, the sisters began designing and printing scarves for friends. “The idea grew out of the love of designing textiles and thinking of them as art you could live with.” That philosophy still anchors the work — each piece meant to feel personal.
Their sister dynamic is a big part of that. “We’re extremely close and basically share a brain,” Hopie says. Though she now leads creative direction, her sisters Grier and Lily are still very much involved. “We run ideas past one another constantly, from the color of a jacket trim to the tone of a joke in our weekly newsletter.”
Thirteen years later, they’ve grown to a small-but-mighty team of twelve without taking any outside capital. “It still feels like the passion project we started,” Hopie reflects. And it feels like we’re in on it too. Even in their email blasts, you get to know the people behind the brand — like good friends sharing their art alongside book recommendations or the TikToks that made them laugh that week.

An IRL Experience Worth Visiting
If you’re in LA, don’t skip Block Shop’s Atwater Village location. The space was designed entirely in-house (no architect or interior designer) on one of the neighborhood’s most charming stretches. Visiting feels a bit like stepping into Liberty London — just on a more intimate scale. It’s easy to let the world outside melt away while you get lost in theirs for a while.
The pastel blue storefront draws in passersby from the nearby cafés and vintage shops. Inside, the lofted, light-filled space is layered with textiles you’ll want to touch and carefully sourced home goods that sit seamlessly alongside the brand’s own pieces.
Their workspace and warehouse are tucked just behind the retail floor, and the studio regularly springs to life during workshops and events. “We knew we’d be hosting workshops, community events, and parties, so we designed the studio to be a flexible space for working and gathering.” It’s part store, part studio, part community hangout — and nearly impossible to leave without a small something in hand. Consider that your warning.

Where to Start (If You’re New)
If you’ve somehow managed to avoid a Block Shop treat until now, here’s where I’d begin — whether you’re testing the waters or ready to commit to full-pattern maximalism.
1. Cotton Bandana, $40
This is your easy entry point. These cotton-linen blend bandanas are a low-commitment way to bring Block Shop’s color into your life. Tie it on a bag, in your hair, or around your neck.
2. Cult-Favorite Robes, $165
They’re graphic, bold, and flattering on everyone. Throw one on for morning coffee, use as a pool cover-up in summer, or wear it out if you want — it’s one of those pieces that’s technically loungewear but I can easily envision wearing out with a white tee and jeans.
3. Table Napkins (Set of 4), $75
These cotton-linen blend napkins are what started it all for me. They’re what I pull out for meals when I want to feel like I made an effort — or like I’m a real adult who doesn’t default to paper towels for everything. They’re obviously a great housewarming gift, too.
4. Pajama Sets, $145+
The most recent addition to my Block Shop collection. These 100% cotton sets (I opted for shorts) are comfortable in any weather and I’m fully convinced that matching pajamas contribute to a better night's sleep.
5. Dog Beds, $225+
Back by popular demand, Block Shop’s customer fave dog beds have been newly re-released in their bestselling performance fabric, Sunbrella. They’re functional and a refreshingly bold alternative to the drab microfiber options found at pet supply stores. And as somebody with three dogs myself, they’re a must-have.
Design That Lives With You
Block Shop’s designs feel genuinely timeless. Ten years later, I still rotate those original napkins into dinner. They’ve softened after countless washes but haven’t lost their charm — proof of that “live with it” ethos in action. And even as my personal style has shifted since 2016, my Block Shop pieces continue to fit in, adapting right alongside me.
In an industry steeped in heritage houses and centuries-old textile traditions, carving out a distinct point of view isn’t easy. But the team behind Block Shop has built a brand that feels both deeply rooted and entirely their own. I’m excited to see how they continue to shape the world of textiles in the years ahead.
