When it comes to immune health, my approach has always matched my habits: keep it practical, keep it immediate. Beyond washing hands and a no-shoes-in-the-house rule, I routinely stock up on zinc lozenges, vitamin C packets, and greens gummies, all promising to keep me standing through whatever my kids drag in the door. It works well enough, and honestly, it's the version of immunity most of us were raised on.
But here's something new I learned: my immune system is doing a lot more than warding off seasonal threats. It's directly linked to gut balance, energy, mental clarity, and even how well I age. When researchers and practitioners talk about immune health, they're talking about the foundation of whole-body wellness, not simply a line of defense we activate a few times a year.
That reframe is what drew me to Big Bold Health, and to their hero ingredient: Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat, the ancient fruit seed at the center of their Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Sprout Powder and Immunity Chews with Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat. While my current vitamin regime isn’t going anywhere, it turns out there's a deeper layer to immune wellness worth paying attention to – and Big Bold Health is leading the charge.

What Exactly Is Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat?
Big Bold Health was founded by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, who has spent over four decades connecting the dots between what we eat, how our immune cells renew, and how we age. His thesis, put plainly: most of what we think of as "aging" and "decline" is actually influenced by and directly linked to our immune wellness. And this immune resilience is, in large part, shaped by nutrition.
The brand’s hero ingredient, Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat or HTB as it’s commonly referred to, is an ancient superseed that's been cultivated for over 3,500 years that features immune balance and health-promoting properties. It thrives in high elevations and harsh climates (think the remote mountain regions of Asia). The plant produces 3x more protective compounds called polyphenols, specifically quercetin and rutin, than conventional buckwheat flour.
In the body, polyphenols support the gut-immune axis by shifting microbial composition and activity in the gut in a “prebiotic-like” direction and helping modulate immune balance. In other words, this plant compound fuels beneficial gut bacteria, supports metabolic steadiness, and helps stabilize energy and mood. To put things in perspective, the healthiest cultures in the world consume about 2 grams or more a day, while Americans typically consume just 800 mg to 1 gram. That's exactly where Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Sprout Powder can help bridge the gap.
For Dr. Bland, food is medicine, which became increasingly clear the more I dug into the science and research behind HTB (more on that below).
Taste and Convenience
Armed with a better understanding that our immune system isn’t just fighting colds, but actually influencing how I age, my energy levels and gut balance, I was especially eager to try out this storied superfood. While Big Bold Health has an entire line of products, I decided to try two of their most popular: Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat Sprout Powder and Immunity Chews with Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat.
Something our wellness editors often discuss: no matter what’s in a great or revolutionary product, if you can’t commit to actually taking it everyday, nothing else matters. In short, both taste and convenience play a huge role in our supplements. I was curious to know about the taste and convenience of these.
This is not your normal buckwheat. The immune-active polyphenol power boasts up to 200x that of common buckwheat, all while promoting stronger immunity and a healthy gut.

Generally, I try most powdered supplements a few times before I gently move them to the back of a cabinet due to taste and/or effort. Surprisingly, that wasn’t the case here.
The recommended serving is just one teaspoon a day, which I started adding to my morning yogurt, and unlike most powders, it actually works there. The flavor is subtly nutty and faintly earthy, but not in an off-putting way. It disappears into whatever you add it to (no clumps). I've also stirred it into smoothies, folded it into a batch of banana bread, and even sprinkled it over my morning bowl of cereal. Taking it in the morning has been the easiest to remember, and the fact that it doesn't compete with the flavor of anything else makes that genuinely easy to keep up.

We don't like

When my morning routine goes sideways, Big Bold Health's Immunity Chews are my no-prep backup. These bite-sized chews pack the same core HTB polyphenols alongside zinc, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin D, and cocoa, and unlike the powder, the taste is straight-up chocolatey, which is a perk when you have a sweet tooth like me. The taste is akin to a slightly more sophisticated Tootsie Roll.
I started reaching for one in the afternoon as a sweet treat stand-in, and noticed I was soon skipping my usual 3pm cup of tea more often than not. I started keeping these in my purse for an on-the-go option to fuel me through my kids’ afternoon carpools and sports practices.

What I’ve Noticed So Far
I appreciate that Big Bold Health isn't trying to oversell me on instant results. In fact, they're clear that the immune system renews most of its cells roughly every 90 days, which means using their products consistently helps build immune wellness over time, instead of hacking it together in an unsustainable, unhealthy way.
After a couple of weeks, I’ve noticed my energy levels aren’t as pendulum-like – they’re more steady and predictable. I’ve also cut down on my afternoon caffeine kick, which is saying something considering how long I’ve been reliant on a mid-afternoon pick me up to get me through to bedtime.
While I don’t feel instantly transformed, I wasn’t expecting to. What I do feel is a bit more balanced and focused. And given everything I now know about how closely immunity is tied to energy, gut health, and mental clarity, I don't think that's a coincidence.
The Final Verdict
Big Bold Health is doing something most wellness brands aren't: building products around the immune system as the pillar of long-term health, backed by real research, transparent sourcing and production, and a functional medicine founder who has spent his career earning the right to make that argument.
It’s worth noting that while much is already known about the benefits of HTB, Big Bold Health is contributing to truly fueling the scientific research of this ancient plant. Earlier this year they launched a large-scale randomized clinical trial that’s evaluating HTB sprout powder. The study has already enrolled 850 participants, and is believed to be the largest randomized placebo-controlled trial ever conducted on a single food ingredient, brain health, and immunity.
This is not a marketing-driven trial, but a true randomized, placebo-controlled study whose results will be published and available to the public. For a single food ingredient to be studied at this scale is nearly unheard of.
The brand’s approach to scientific integrity combined with the efficacy (and taste) of the products themselves, makes this a must-try for anyone who values brands who take the science and customer experience seriously.
If you've been thinking about immune wellness beyond cold season – and it turns out, you probably should be – Big Bold Health is a worthwhile place to start.
