Increasingly ubiquitous brand Quince launched their first celebrity partnership last week, and it’s a big one: an exclusive collab with A$AP Rocky to celebrate the release of his new album, DON’T BE DUMB. Quince has been rapidly expanding over the last couple years, launching products that span categories from apparel to lifestyle to homewares, and even luxury food and beverage. This attempt at an all-encompassing, lifestyle-defining scope reminded me of the ascent of another iconic brand beloved by millennials: Urban Outfitters.
In the 2010’s, millennials went to Urban Outfitters for everything. The affordable price point and quick turnover of merchandise meant that the brand could respond to trend cycles quickly and start trends of their own. Like Quince, they branched out from affordable, on-trend apparel into an ever-expanding collection of categories from furniture to skincare.
Now that millennials are a little older, with more serious taste and more luxurious appetites, is Quince filling the void that Urban Outfitters left when that brand decided to commit to an evergreen teenage audience, rather than evolving with the generation that first embraced them? Will Quince manage to both capture the zeitgeist and launch trendsetting products like Urban Outfitters did in the 2010s? The A$AP Rocky collaboration represents a real desire to enter the cultural conversation – I’m interested to see where they go from here. Let’s explore.
