Technically, you can ride a bike in just about anything. T-shirt, Hawaiian shirt, no shirt––whatever. But if you plan to ride farther than your local bodega, you’re going to want an actual cycling jersey.

A good jersey isn’t just about looking like you know what you’re doing (though that’s a nice bonus). It’s about comfort, practicality, and, yes, a little bit of vanity. You want something lightweight, breathable, and close-fitting enough that it doesn’t whip around like a windsock. Also, pockets. Because no one has ever regretted having space for a spare tube and a muffin.

These days, jerseys have gotten ridiculously good––stretchy, aerodynamic, and loaded with the latest moisture-wicking technology. So whether you’re chasing KOMs, chasing your friends, or just chasing the thought of an ice-cold beer at the end of the ride, it’s worth investing in proper jerseys just as much as padded bibs and a reliable helmet.

What to Look For

Before you go dropping a week’s worth of grocery money on a jersey, let’s talk about what actually matters. Cycling apparel companies love to tell you their jersey is “pro-level,” “aerodynamic,” or “inspired by the peloton.” That’s all great if you’re getting paid to ride. But for the rest of us, marketing fluff aside, here’s what actually makes a good cycling jersey worth wearing.

Fit

You want it snug, but not "I need a crowbar to get this thing off" snug. A jersey should feel like a second skin. If it’s too baggy, it’ll flap around too much. If it’s too tight, you’ll spend the entire ride pulling at it. Find the middle ground: fitted enough to do its job, loose enough that you still have freedom to move. In some instances, this might mean sizing up.

Pockets

Three rear pockets. Non-negotiable. This is the entire reason cycling jerseys exist and why we’re not all riding around in running singlets. If your jersey can’t hold a phone, a multi-tool, a tube, a mini-pump, and an emergency candy bar, it has failed you. Bonus points for a little zippered security pocket for your phone or wallet.

Fabric

In the summer, you want something light that wicks sweat fast. Breathability matters. Moisture management matters. Some people swear by merino blends because they stay stink-free longer, but synthetic fabrics generally dry faster.

Zipper

Two words: full-length, easy-gliding. Ideally, you should be able to zip and unzip your jersey one-handed while making your way up a climb. Half zips and quarter zips are a firm no. Full zip = full control.

Sleeves

Modern jerseys often have “longer” sleeves that reach almost to the elbow, and this is actually a good thing. They don’t ride up, they don't bunch weirdly at the shoulders, and they help with sun protection.

Grippers

Little silicone dots or strips at the waist and sleeves that keep everything where it’s supposed to be. Without them, your jersey will start riding up all over. You’ll be tugging it down constantly, and not in a "pro cyclist adjusting his aero tuck" kind of way.

Looks

You're going to spend hours looking at yourself in gas station windows, store fronts, and whatever reflective surfaces you ride pass. You might as well like what you see. Find a jersey that expresses who you are, or who you want to be on the bike. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Price

Buy what fits your budget and your riding habits. If you’re only riding a couple times a month, you don’t need a drawer full of options or the “Pro” level jersey––just one or two that’ll hold up well will do.

Our Six Favorite Cycling Jerseys

After hundreds of miles testing out the latest and greatest from a handful of cycling brands, here are our six favorite cycling jerseys.

Rapha

Pro Team Lightweight Jersey

I’m usually skeptical of anything with “Pro” in the name, especially if you’re just a recreational rider like me. But this jersey from cycling’s most iconic apparel brand is by far my favorite in their assortment. It is made from an exceptionally lightweight and high-stretch fabric, with an open-mesh construction that provides unparalleled airflow and moisture management (you can actually feel the breeze through it, which is miraculous on summer climbs). The collar is a standout feature, with a low cut front for comfort and a raised collar at the back of the neck for some extra protection against the sun. As cliche as it sounds, this is a jersey that doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a jersey. Splurge on this, and you won’t need another for the rest of the summer. In fact, good luck wearing anything else once you’ve experienced the joy of this piece.

Pas Normal Studios

Mechanism Jersey

The flagship jersey from the ultra-desirable Danish brand, the Mechanism Jersey is bound to be present on any group ride around the city. Sure, it’s easy to claim that Pas Normal Studios has become a brand that’s popular amongst the type of rider who spends more time curating their kit than actually pedaling. But after enough rides in it to form an honest opinion myself, I can certainly say there’s a reason this jersey has captured the zeitgeist of modern cycling. The new iteration, released this year, features a lower-cut collar to improve comfort and a new concealed side pocket that makes it easier to reach your essentials. It’s snug––very snug––so I tend to size up. And while it’s a jersey that’s marketed for “fast-paced training, intervals and racing,” it works just as well on long easy rides or laps around the park. Is it a jersey that performs as well as any I’ve tested? For sure. Are you still paying a markup for the brand? Absolutely. But sometimes it’s nice to wear something that feels fast and looks spectacular, even if you’re mostly just chasing coffee and existential peace.

MAAP

Aeon Jersey

While Polartec is traditionally known for its cold-weather fabrics that keep you warm when you're freezing your drivetrain off, MAAP uses Polartec Delta™ in their new endurance-optimized Aeon Jersey, which is actually designed specifically for hot-weather performance. Unlike typical synthetics that only wick sweat away, Delta™ retains a bit of moisture to enhance evaporative cooling, while its open-knit structure boosts airflow and reduces cling. The result is a jersey that stays cool, dry, and comfortable on long, sweaty summer rides. Its minimalist structure is met with a comfortable collar, longer sleeve length, and fitted (but not suffocating) tailoring. While certainly on the more expensive side, this is one of the jerseys I’d pick if you only needed one or two in your riding rotation.

Attaquer

All Day Jersey

As the name implies, the Attaquer All Day Jersey is made for staying comfortable on long, all-day rides. Previously listed as a top pick in my Guide to Building the Perfect Kit, I’ve had it in rotation for over a year now, and it keeps showing up when I need something I won’t regret wearing after hour three. It’s not flashy, it’s not fussy––it just works. The sleeves are a featherweight mesh with a raglan cut, so they actually move with your arms instead of fighting them. The body’s well structured, which keeps the jersey (and the goods inside your pockets) from riding up or flapping too much in the wind. And the front panel is cut a bit shorter than past versions, which helps reduce bunching in the riding position. Breathability is top notch, construction is sharp, and it’s held up to repeated washing. For the price, it’s in that rare category of kit that actually delivers on comfort without drowning you in aero buzzwords.

Velocio

Merino Luxe Jersey

The Velocio Merino Luxe Jersey is proof that merino wool doesn’t have to mean thick, itchy, or strictly for winter. It’s made from a balanced blend of natural merino wool, nylon, and elastane, so you get the best of many different worlds: a fabric that feels soft, stretches comfortably, and stands up to the demands of long rides. Just as versatile for a brisk morning ride as it is for a warmer summer day, it regulates temperature and wicks moisture exceptionally well, while also resisting odors (which your local cafe barista will appreciate). Velocio has also added an ultralight mesh back panel that offers unparalleled breathability. While I haven’t been riding seriously for more than a few years, I have friends who still have their Velocio kits from ten years ago. Needless to say, their products hold up.

Specialized

Prime Short Sleeve Jersey

The Prime Jersey from Specialized is easy to wear, made from quality fabrics, and has minimal branding so it can be paired with clothing and equipment from other brands. It’s made from a refined mix of nylon and elastane that feels smooth and appears slightly matte, while lightweight stretch mesh panels at the underarms and hem provide just the right amount of airflow to keep you comfortable. While I’d pick something slightly lighter weight for a peak summer ride, this is a jersey that’s perfectly suited for shoulder seasons. It’s also the ideal choice if you’re after a jersey that’s stylish without being showy.

There’s something about zipping up a well-made jersey that makes even a routine ride feel like an adventure. It’s the promise of a pocket full of snacks, the comfort of fabric that actually breathes, and the quiet confidence of knowing you’re prepared for whatever the ride throws at you.

No jersey can make you faster, but the right one can make you want to keep riding. That’s why my motto for cycling jerseys (and apparel at large) has always been: fewer, better. If you’re looking for your next favorite, any of our top six picks is a great place to start.
