The Meat Delivery Service Throwdown: We Found The Best

Is there an entree more satisfying or delicious than a juicy cut of meat? When sourced sustainably and cooked simply, a ribeye, sirloin, or filet mignon truly cannot be beat. The only problem is that finding local, quality meat is trickier than it seems. As I’ve begun investing more effort into eating clean protein, I’ve come to realize that the meat industry isn’t as transparent as I’d like it to be – and making an extra trip to a local butcher isn’t a to-do I particularly enjoy (it’s expensive, too). So, I opted to try out a meat delivery service, and then figured why not try two? I did the heavy lifting (though it was admittedly only from my front door to the kitchen) for you – and ultimately found one winning option for easy, affordable, and – most importantly – high-quality meat I can trust. Welcome to the meat delivery service throwdown, featuring Good Chop and ButcherBox!

The Players

Both Good Chop and ButcherBox appear to be on a similar mission: to make high-quality meats more accessible (and convenient) for shoppers. With both brands, you have the option to choose an online plan and customize the meat and seafood you’ll receive each month. On the surface, they seem pretty similar, but I identified several key differences with each brand. They include…

Value

Good Chop: Good Chop’s Medium Box starts at $149 and includes up to 36 portions or 14 lbs of your choice. The Large Box (72 portions or 28 lbs) is $269 and the Extra Large Box (108 portions or 42 lbs) is $359, which averages out to $3.32 per serving. Plus, if you use code TQE120E, you can enjoy $120 off your first four boxes!

ButcherBox: There is a $169 Custom Classic Box, which includes 9-14 lbs of meat. The brand’s Custom ‘Big Box’ is $306. In terms of value, that means ButcherBox’s portions are over $5/serving if you want the option to choose the proteins and cuts you’ll receive.

Sourcing

Good Chop: Exclusively sourced from American farms and fisheries, Good Chop’s meat comes from family farms and independent ranchers, and its seafood is wild-caught off U.S. coastlines or raised in U.S. farms. They never use antibiotics or added hormones – just responsibly raised, sustainably sourced meat and seafood.

ButcherBox: The brand partners with people ‘who are dedicated to doing the right thing.’ Those people seem to be in Australia, as the brand imports the majority of its beef from there due to the country’s high animal welfare standards. I can appreciate this, but was also bummed that my meat wasn’t local.

Customization & Choice

Good Chop: No matter which box you choose, Good Chop is fully customizable. They have over 70 different cuts of beef, pork, chicken, and seafood – and you get to pick whatever you want for your box! Regarding beef offering, Good Chop offers both 100% grass-fed and grain-finished options, while ButcherBox does only the former.

ButcherBox: While ButcherBox has a lower-cost option for a pre-curated box, you’ll have to pay extra to customize your box (the $169 option I mentioned above). If you go this route, you can choose from various cuts, but when it comes to beef you have only 100% grass-fed option. So if marbling is important for you, it might not be the best choice.

Convenience

Good Chop: Simply put, Good Chop makes things as simple as possible. Each box is delivered to your door on your schedule, and you can cancel anytime. Plus, you can expect everything to be vacuum-sealed and frozen at peak freshness so you can stock your freezer and cook it whenever you’re ready.

ButcherBox: Similar story here. The brand offers a lot of flexibility in terms of delivery and cancellation, and everything is packed like a pro!
