New Year, New You, New Furry Friend: Start Your Year (And Your Pup’s!) On The Right Foot

A new year is the ultimate fresh slate – it’s why so many of us see it as the optimal time to adopt a furry friend. They’re cute, they’re sweet, and they provide that jolt of effort we all hope to infuse into our day-to-day come January 1. Building a solid foundation with your new pup is key – and if you’re looking for a few tips, you’re in the right spot. Below, we’re sharing some of our editors’ best advice for starting the year on the right foot (...and paw).

Invest In Good Food

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: quality dog food is worth the investment. This time of year, you’re likely paying more attention to how you’re fueling yourself – and your dog deserves that same consideration! Our editors recommend Nom Nom hands down. The brand delivers four real food options – Beef Mash, Chicken Cuisine, Pork Potluck, and Turkey Fare – straight to your door. These recipes are made with fresh whole ingredients in company-owned kitchens, and each pre-portioned meal is free of preservatives and fillers. Trust us, your dog will notice the difference – and you will too (think more energy, shinier coat, and better breath).

Prep Your Space

Initially, make sure your dog has a set space in your home. Free rein can often lead to accidents and chewed up something-or-others, so it’s important that your pup has boundaries. Gates, pens, and dog crates definitely come in handy in keeping your home as put-together as possible. That also means creating an ultra-cozy place for your pup – a plush bed and plenty of toys are definitely in order.

Build A Routine

Here’s where the whole new-year-new-you thing really kicks in. Dogs, like humans, thrive with a routine (one you actually stick to!). The routine itself isn’t as important as simply having one that’s consistent. It can include set times for walks, meals, snacks, time in a kennel or pen, hanging out with the family, and exploring in the yard.

Get Outside

As a California-based team, we recognize that we’re extra lucky in this regard. We love walks, hikes, and beach days with our pups, but suggest simply getting outside and moving whenever possible (yes, this is the ‘exercise’ portion of your New Year's resolution). For those who live in more challenging climates, consider playing fetch in an available room or hallway, or invest in a treat-dispensing toy (it’s another fun way to give your pup’s brain a workout). And when it’s not too freezing, playing in the snow is an east-coast editor fan favorite!

Inhale, Exhale

Lastly, recognize that this is a project you took on for a reason! It’s a messy, frustrating, and endlessly rewarding journey. Simply do the best you can. Remember that your pup picks up on stress and is simply searching for some love. Dish it out freely – and prepare to have it returned in spades.
