I Asked a Dermatologist About Red Light Therapy. These 4 Answers Surprised Me.

Red light therapy is one of those wellness things that quickly went from medical grade to it-girl essential thanks, in part, to social media. Seeing so many influencers in scroll-stopping masks convinced us all that we needed them. But while I love a techy device, I’m also a known skeptic when it comes to wellness and beauty trends.

So, I tracked down Dr. Andrea Suarez MD, FAAD, a Board-certified dermatologist (also known as @drdrayzday on social media) and peppered her with a bunch of questions to decide: is red light therapy legit or just another trend? And do I – an acne-prone individual with a minimal skincare routine – really need an LED device? To cut to the chase: Dr. Suarez recommends LED therapy if you’re willing to commit to consistent use, and Omnilux’s devices more specifically. Here’s what she shared that surprised me.

1. The Research on LED Therapy Is Real

“As far as at home devices for skin and for hair, LED devices are one of the most research-backed tools that someone could invest in,” Dr. Suarez explains, especially for acne, skin rejuvenation, wound healing, and hair restoration:

  1. In a split-face clinical trial following 12 LED treatments over 90% of individuals had a reduction in wrinkle depth and surface roughness.
  2. A double-blind clinical trial using an LED mask for 16 weeks showed an improvement rate of up to 89% in skin rejuvenation.
  3. A double-blind, randomized controlled trial showed a statistically significant increase in hair density and thickness for both male and female patients when using red light devices compared to placebo devices.

2. It’s All About Consistency

To be clear, “LED light therapy works,” according to Dr. Suarez. Importantly, though, you have to use your device consistently: “I always tell people, if you don’t think you can stay consistent with regularly using an at-home device, don’t buy one.” LED light therapy works through photobiomodulation, where specific wavelengths of light stimulate cellular mitochondria to boost ATP production and reduce inflammation. It’s not a quick fix or a cure-all, but committing to it over several months is where you’ll yield results.

3. Only Some At-Home Devices Use Clinical Grade Light Therapy

While there are many devices on the market, they’re not all the same. Dr. Suarez recommends Omnilux specifically because, “Their devices provide clinical-grade light therapy and they make many of the same professional devices used in office.” On top of that, Omnilux utilizes highly specific, clinically validated wavelengths of light at optimized outputs to penetrate the skin, and are rigorously vetted for safety. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case, and “A poorly designed device can easily harm someone.”

4. Dr. Suarez Uses Omnilux Herself

“I use [Omnilux’s] Contour Face mask myself and have noticed improvements in skin firmness and plumpness over time,” Dr. Suarez shares. It’s easy to use at home, lightweight, and comfortable to wear, and has clinical data to back it up:

  1. 95% of users experienced brighter, plumper skin.
  2. 98% saw firmer skin after a consistent 4-6 week treatment cycle.
