I Asked a Dermatologist If Elastin and Peptides Are the Next Big Thing in Brow & Lash Care. Here’s What She Shared…

As a beauty editor, I've developed a bit of an obsession with hair health. We used to think thinning hair was something you had to accept, but today's treatments and ingredients are changing that. And while I've spent plenty of time researching solutions for scalp hair loss in both men and women, I knew very little about another area where many of us notice thinning as we age: our eyebrows and eyelashes.

Curious to learn more, I spoke with dermatologist Dr. Bonnie Hodge about the biology behind brow and lash health, why elastin- and peptide-based formulas are generating so much interest, and whether the science behind them actually holds up. Here are my four takeaways from our conversation.

1. Elastin Plays a Bigger Role Than I’d Realized

While I associated elastin with skin elasticity, Dr. Hodge explained that it's also an important structural protein within the hair follicle. "Think of elastin as part of the anchor for a hair within the follicle," she explains. "It helps the brow and lash hair remain anchored despite how much manipulation the eye area undergoes." As elastin naturally degrades over time, the structures supporting our brows and lashes may become less resilient – which may help explain why so many people notice thinning with age.

2. Two Formulas, Each Doing Different Work

Rather than asking one ingredient to do everything, NULASTIN's Lash & Brow Dual System pairs a peptide-driven serum with a complementary formula, each supporting a different part of follicle health. Dr. Hodge sees this layered approach as more realistic than a single hero ingredient – brow and lash health, she notes, tends to respond better to a system than a shortcut.

3. NULASTIN Is a Clinically-Studied Solution She Recommends

Dr. Hodge recommends NULASTIN, which formulates its brow and lash serums around elastin rather than prostaglandins. Its proprietary Elastaplex® Technology incorporates a biodesigned signal peptide designed to support the appearance of fuller-looking brows and lashes. In a 12-week independent clinical study, 100% of participants reported visibly fuller-looking brows, while 97% noticed their lashes appeared to grow faster after using NULASTIN.* Dr. Hodge calls NULASTIN's LASH and BROW Dual System a “fantastic option” for patients looking to address age-related thinning.

4. Consistency Is the Secret

Dr. Hodge emphasizes patience and consistency. While some users begin noticing changes around the six-week mark, about 12 weeks of consistent use is when the results really kick in. And once you achieve the look you're after, don't stop. “In clinic, I often compare this to fertilizer for a rose bush. If you stop using the fertilizer, the amount of roses is going to go back down to baseline growth.”
