Packed & Ready: The 5 Hospital Bag Essentials That Saved Me (3 Times!)

Shop Comrad

Welcoming your baby into the world is incredibly exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming and a little nerve-wracking (did I order enough diapers?). I felt like I was bouncing between pure excitement and total panic – and the only thing that truly calmed me down was being prepared. As a Type A parent, preparation is my lifeline, and when it came to labor and my postpartum hospital stay, having a well-packed bag gave me the confidence boost I needed to step into motherhood. After doing this thing three times, here are the absolute essentials you’ll want to pack in your hospital bag…

Comrad: Knee-High Compression Socks

Compression socks are great for improving blood flow in your legs and preventing swelling, a common symptom during pregnancy (especially in the third trimester!). I love these contoured-fit compression socks because they provide medium compression support (15-20 mmHg) to enhance circulation and prevent soreness and swelling. And, they’re my secret weapon for postpartum swelling, too. The toe and heel cushioning? Chef’s kiss.

Bodily: The Everything Bra

No matter what type of birth you have, labor is uncomfortable (just being real). The best thing you can do for yourself during labor and postpartum is prioritize your comfort—and that starts with your breasts. As they grow during pregnancy, a comfortable bra becomes essential for your nipples, shoulders, back, and even your mental health. I love this super soft bra because it feels like you're not wearing one at all (you can even sleep in it!). Plus, if you choose to breastfeed, it has a one-handed, clip-down design for convenient nursing access.

Tubby Todd: All Over Ointment Eczema Treatment

There’s something about being in a hospital that makes your skin incredibly dry, and no one wants to hold their newborn with rough, sandpaper hands. With all the washing and sanitizing that comes with a hospital stay, my skin takes a beating, so I always keep this tube of hydrating cream on the hospital bedside table. It’s rich, thick, ultra-nourishing, without a strong scent (fragrance-free) and won’t leave an oily residue on your hands.

Happiest Baby: Sleepea® 5-Second Baby Swaddle

Swaddling helps your baby feel safe, warm, and cozy—just like they were back in the womb. When you're in postpartum care, your nurse will probably help you swaddle your baby with a traditional hospital blanket, but doing it yourself feels like it requires a PhD in hand acrobatics (especially when you're exhausted!). After my first baby, I quickly learned that swaddles with zipper closures are essential. I own at least two dozen of these swaddles because they’re soft, easy to use, made from breathable cotton, and give you the option to swaddle with arms in or out.

Ritual: Postnatal Multivitamin

Your body goes through a lot after labor, so it’s important to nourish yourself with a healthy diet and the proper nutrients to support recovery (and lactation if you’re breastfeeding). I love the Ritual Postnatal multivitamin because it includes all the essential nutrients moms need during the postpartum period, like vitamins A and D, folate, iron, choline, and omega-3 fatty acids to support brain development. Plus, the supplements are infused with a hint of mint, so it's a refreshing and enjoyable daily ritual (and no weird aftertaste!).
