Not Your Mama’s Parenting: 4 Things I’m Doing Differently As A New Mom

Becoming a new mom is the most exhilarating human experience I’ve ever had. Having a kid has helped me understand my own parents' experience, and it’s also made me wonder: how on earth did parents survive nights with a newborn before Google?!? How did they keep track of feeding schedules and diaper changes without an app? Raising a child today feels completely different from how it was 30 years ago. I’m much happier to be a parent in 2022. Here are some things I’m doing differently…that happen to make life much easier.

Investing In Premium Diapers

Coterie diapers are the first thing I recommend to new parents. They're so absorbent, which results in fewer blowouts and middle of the night leaks. I was recently in a pinch on a trip and had to use a different brand for the first time. It only confirmed what I already knew: buying quality diapers actually matters. Coterie diapers are hypoallergenic, as soft as cashmere, and worth every penny. The real cherry on top is how convenient they are to keep on hand. The brand offers an auto-renew membership, and I can send a simple text if I need to expedite my next shipment, change the order, or even change sizes. Not having to log into an account is everything when you’re a new parent juggling a million things!

Education Around Gentle Parenting

Social media doesn’t replace a therapist, but parents today have more accessibility to learn from family therapists and psychologists online. Dr. Becky Kennedy shares easy-to-digest infographics that help parents understand attachment styles, emotion regulation, and how to take a different approach than the reward-and-punishment model that previous generations used. Eli Harwood helps parents learn the research behind creating a secure attachment style. I’m grateful to be a parent when access to this kind of informed information is readily available by scrolling through TikTok or Instagram. Gone are the days of telling your child to do something just because, “I’m the parent, you’re the kid!”

Using A Smart Bassinet

Before my first kid, I’d heard horror stories from parents about sleepless nights, and it terrified me of the newborn stage. Then I discovered the Snoo. While my parents drove us around in the car all night to rock us to sleep, I safely swaddle my baby into a bassinet that soothes him throughout the night with white noise and a gentle rocking motion. It’s almost as good as having a live-in nanny those first few weeks. Dr. Harvey Karp, a pediatrician who created The Snoo, also wrote a book called Happiest Baby on the Block. In it Dr. Karp educates parents on the 5 S’s, which include tools to help soothe a colicky baby.

No More Crying It Out

Sleep training is another child-rearing method that has changed drastically. Parents have become skeptical of how harsh training methods may have long term damaging effects which has caused them to turn towards sleep classes and resources that are gentle and emotionally connected. For example, Taking Cara Babies provides online classes to help parents lay a healthy sleep foundation while still making sure your baby feels loved, supported, and connected. full feedings is another method that also offers free resources on Instagram that help educate parents around why their baby may be waking up in the night, or refusing naps so that steps can be made towards an overall way of life that supports healthy sleep.
