Dave Asprey, the "Father of Biohacking," Just Came Out With the Newest Thing in Coffee, and I Got to Try It

In partnership with Danger Coffee . Editor’s Note: We only select and work with partners that meet our quality standards, so you can rest assured we only endorse products we believe in.

If you really think about it, there are few beverages that can say that they provide people with energy, facilitate a daily ritual, and give friends and work colleagues something to do when bars and restaurants are no longer on the docket.

But coffee can.

According to the National Coffee Association (which I think I’m now obsessed with for existing), at least two-thirds of Americans drink coffee every day—three cups on average. That would be good and fine if up to 90% of today’s store-bought (yes, even organic!) coffee wasn’t riddled with chemicals and mold toxins (aka mycotoxins, which we’ll address later), having serious long-term ramifications on one’s overall health.

This is why it only makes sense that Dave Asprey—also known as “The Father of Biohacking” and Bulletproof Coffee Founder—decided to upgrade coffee once more with Danger Coffee. Not only does it carry on Bulletproof’s mold-free legacy, but it goes one step further, actively supporting detoxification, replenishing nutrients, and fueling the body’s natural energy production.

Given I’ve avoided coffee for years because of my own health journey, fear of mold, acidity aversion, and energy overload, I was the perfect person to give Asprey’s Medium Roast Ground Remineralized Coffee a try.

We like

  • All products are mold-free, farm-direct, lab-tested, and remineralized (omg)
  • Beans are hand-picked and parchment-dried via mechanical demucilagination to avoid chemical processing
  • Flavor is super clean, not acidic, and therefore not digestively challenging
  • Every cup contains minerals and electrolytes that support gut health, immune function, and hydration
  • Pioneered by the Biohacking Daddy (and Bulletproof Coffee creator) himself, Dave Asprey
  • Well-priced at ~$27 for over a month’s-worth of coffee and a daily mineral supplement

We don't like

  • I’ll be honest, I don’t really have anything bad to say about this! It hits all of my personal high notes (and impossible wellness standards!)

The Truth About Mycotoxins

After moving back to Los Angeles in 2017 with a non-existent microbiome—one riddled with yeast and upsetting flora and fauna—my Naturopathic Doctor (who I won’t stop yapping about) forbade me from going near coffee.

“Have you heard of mycotoxins?” Obviously I hadn’t.

As niche wellness topics have hit more of the mainstream, so, too, has the discussion about mycotoxins, which are toxic compounds that are naturally produced by certain types of molds/fungi. While the concept of engaging with mold or fungus in our food isn’t entirely outrageous (think: cheese, mushrooms, tempeh, for example), long-term contamination, exposure, and consumption can potentially impact one’s immune function, energy levels, and overall health.

In the context of coffee processing, the majority of coffee beans go through dry/natural processing or poorly managed, fermentation-based wet processing; both of which set beans up to be prime real estate for mold growth and mycotoxins—the naughtiest, most havoc-wreaking one being ochratoxin A.

So how are you supposed to enjoy your favorite part of the day without worrying about the dreaded mold-ridden coffee in your cup? Follow me to the next section.

The safest Danger I’ve ever experienced.

Dave Asprey’s New Take on Danger

From the man who brought butter and MCT oil in coffee to the masses, Danger Coffee is one of Asprey’s most innovative products yet.

Most coffee lovers report that—even though they love and need their morning cup of Joe—they acknowledge that it can make them dehydrated, mess with their digestion, set them up for an energy slump, requiring more coffee later and depleting them in the process.

Danger Coffee rights all of these wrongs.

Who knows what you (I) will do next?!

Of course, being mold-free is Danger Coffee’s “clean bean” foundation, but it also accounts for other everyday health needs like mineral support. In fact, each cup contains your daily dose of minerals with 255mg of fulvic acid and 1035mg of humic acid, which help to support immune health, sustain energy levels, aid in nutrient absorption, improve hydration, support gut health and detoxification, and assist cell renewal. They’ve all been added after roasting, so as to allow them to remain intact and bioavailable. This means you’re getting even more mineral support in your daily supplement stack, which—as my aforementioned Naturopathic Doctor says—is essential for women’s health!

Beyond being Remineralized™ with 50+ trace minerals and electrolytes, Danger Coffee prioritizes a farm-direct sourcing that leverages single-origin, SCA-grade beans that come directly from small estate farms using regenerative farming practices, making it even cleaner than most organic coffees.

“But how do they do it?” you wonder. Asprey has combined the most ideal processing methods into one. All of Danger Coffee’s beans are parchment-dried, but then mechanically demucilaginated (HUGE WORD ALERT), which means a machine removes the sticky fruit layer of the bean that attracts mold.

Oh, and did I tell you that every single batch is third-party tested to ensure that there are no toxins, mold, or naughty things in your cup?

Biohacking yellow-light glasses may or may not have been “in the picture” pre-coffee.

A Little Taste of Danger

The first words I uttered when I received my Medium Roast Ground Remineralized Coffee were, “Nevertheless, she persisted.”

As a self-identifying Not Coffee Drinker (™), I decided I would approach my personal coffee-making process the old-fashioned way…using a french press. A method that was luckily accounted for on Danger Coffee’s very own website.

Only a true coffee connoisseur could do this (she lied).

I took a whiff, feeling like a coffee expert all of a sudden, and could already tell my upcoming brew was not going to be acidic. “We carry on!” I screamed.

After a four-minute brew, it was time to see what I was made of—what it was made of. I opted to go sans homemade almond mylk, so I could get a real taste of Danger…Coffee, and I gotta say, I was surprised.

The flavor was super smooth in a way that I could actually taste how clean it was. It also far superseded any store-bought or in-store coffee I’ve had to date, striking the perfect balance between the bold coffee flavor we all know and love and a subtlety that allowed for an energizing dose to my day with absolutely no crash. Mind you, I chose to sample at 3pm when I’m normally hitting my daily energy slump, and immediately felt revived back to life—no sleep disruption in sight.

Brewed to perfection. The coffee too!

I was mostly extremely excited by the amazing resilience I was all of a sudden given to endure the remainder of the day’s emails and Slack messages with a manic crash at the end.

Fill Your Cup

I, admittedly, wrote this entire piece while wearing yellow-light glasses because I actually do care about the biohacking agenda! Some might even call me…a biohactress.

What this means is that I invest in my health on a cellular level. Longevity is a part of my daily zeitgeist and the quality and processing of what I consume, wear, clean with—and so on, and so forth—is accounted for and therefore matters.

Asprey’s newest venture is an exhilarating one because it embodies his unbelievable breadth of knowledge, and lets every discerning consumer feel seen—whether you’re entering your Biohacking/Wellness Era or are already deep in, struggling to find options that match your aspirational lifestyle. Dare I pun and say Asprey-rational?
