Sabrina Canario knows LA. The founder of Like A Friend Said, a rapidly-growing LA-based social account and newsletter, is part of the wave of local publications gaining steam – quickly – as twenty and thirty-somethings are eager to get out, explore, and support the latest and greatest in their neighborhoods.
So, we threw Canario – who also runs Canario Communications, an LA-based marketing agency that’s worked on social media strategy, brand, and strategic partnerships for brands including Goop Kitchen, Caffe Luxxe, and Surf Canyon – a hardball: if you had to identify which neighborhood someone was from purely from their bag and its contents, could you? What would be inside?
Below, Canario’s thoughts, from Malibu to Brentwood, Silver Lake, and more.
We like
We don't like
The Neighborhood: Malibu
My happy place. Malibu played a major role in shaping my career. After graduating from Pepperdine, it's where I built both Canario Agency and Like A Friend Said, surrounded by a community that supported me as a young entrepreneur at the age of 21. The charm of Malibu lies in its local businesses, rich history, and the people who work tirelessly to preserve both. Despite every challenge thrown its way, Malibu continues to rebuild while holding onto the character that makes it one of the most beautiful and resilient communities in Los Angeles.
What’s Inside:

The Neighborhood: Venice
The neighborhood that has seen me at my best, my worst, and everything in between. Like many twenty-somethings on the Westside, some of my most memorable nights were spent at Venice bars and restaurants, celebrating milestones, navigating life, making questionable decisions, and creating stories I'll laugh about forever. Venice has one of the best food scenes in Los Angeles and a personality all its own. It's creative, chaotic, inspiring, and never afraid to be exactly what it is.
What’s Inside:

The Neighborhood: Brentwood
Some call it boring, I call it home. San Vicente in all her glory. There's nothing like walking down Montana and running into friends, or spending a Sunday morning at the farmers market. And then there's the Brentwood Country Mart, the neighborhood's most beloved spot. Preserved since the 1940s, it serves as a reminder that some of Los Angeles' most special places don't need to reinvent themselves to remain relevant.
What’s Inside:

The Neighborhood: Silver Lake
The hillside homes are architectural gems, tucked between winding streets and some of the city's best views. The restaurants are among the chicest in Los Angeles, and so are the people. Somehow everyone always seems better dressed than I am, even when I've spent an extra ten minutes deciding what to wear before dinner. Drive down Sunset, and you'll catch the Hollywood Sign peeking out, a reminder that you're living in a city people dream of visiting.
What’s Inside:

The Neighborhood: Hollywood
There's a right way to do Hollywood. Beyond the tourists and the Walk of Fame, you'll find some of the city's best restaurants, design studios, and creative spaces. It's a neighborhood that doesn't always get the credit it deserves. I could spend hours wandering through interior design showrooms, discovering a new restaurant, or simply people-watching. Hollywood is at its best when you stop treating it like a tourist destination and start treating it like a neighborhood.
