We like

We don't like

Shelborne Miami Proper is a hotel where, as soon as you step inside, you feel how every detail is considered. Set on Collins Avenue in the heart of Miami Beach, this newly reimagined property arrives as part of the beloved Proper Hotels collection, with the quiet confidence of a brand that knows exactly what it's doing. From the travertine floors to the bespoke woven textile art hanging in the lobby lounge, every detail reads as intentional and entirely, refreshingly cool.

We visited as a family, and what struck me almost immediately was how the hotel manages to feel sophisticated and serene while still being genuinely welcoming to kids. That balance is harder to pull off than it looks, and here, the Shelborne does it well.

Arrival & Ambiance

Walking into the lobby of the Shelborne Miami Proper is a full moment. The soaring ceilings are anchored by oversized tropical plants (I’m a big plant girl), and the seating arrangements are a mix of organic sculptural chairs, low cloud-like sofas, and marble side tables. It feels a bit more like a curated art installation than a hotel lobby. The palette is warm sand and taupe with lush greenery layered throughout. A full bar sits along one side, candlelit and intimate even in the early evening hours.

The overall effect is immediately calming. You feel like you've stepped into someone's incredibly elevated personal world, one where the details have been obsessed over, and the result is something genuinely beautiful. For a hotel that has so clearly prioritized aesthetics, it still manages to feel livable rather than precious.

Check-In & The Room

We stayed in one of the hotel's villa-style accommodations, and the kids were immediately sold – there's an interior staircase leading up to the main sleeping rooms, with a kitchenette and living area below, plus a gorgeous sightline out toward the pool. It's the kind of layout that makes a trip feel special in that specific way only a good staircase can.

The rooms themselves run on the smaller side, and anyone traveling with full-sized luggage (guilty) will want to pack smart. Bathrooms are shower-only, no soaking tub, and the footprint is cozy, which is worth knowing ahead of time but expected and still roomy for South Beach.

Where the rooms absolutely deliver is in the details. The toiletries are elevated and feel entirely in step with the hotel's overall aesthetic, with quality formulas (the villas had Aesop, and main rooms carry GUYandGIRL). A Nespresso machine and an in-room fresh ice machine round out the practical touches. The furniture and finishes are beautiful: warm wood tones, a plush bed dressed in crisp white linens, soft lighting that flatters at every hour. The room feels renovated with genuine care, and for Miami, that matters.

One note on construction: there is active building happening on both sides of the property, which is pretty typical for all of the construction happening all over Miami. During daytime hours, there is some noise, though nothing alarming. The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming throughout, and the check-in experience was warm and seamless.

Food & Dining

Hands down, the food is the crown jewel of the Shelborne Miami Proper. If you're someone who cares about what goes into your body (and increasingly, many of us do) you'll be delighted at the Café at The Shelborne. The restaurant leans into ingredient quality in a way that feels rare for a hotel dining program: fresh farm eggs, grass-fed beef, and zero seed oils. It's the kind of sourcing philosophy you'd expect from a wellness-forward standalone restaurant, not embedded in a hotel lobby. Unfortunately, we did not get the opportunity to go to Pauline Miami, their seafood restaurant that blends Miami Beach history with Latin and Caribbean flavors.

Breakfast is genuinely wonderful. We looked forward to it every morning. The plates arrive beautifully composed, the coffee is Counter Culture (the beloved independent roaster with deep Miami roots), and there's a complimentary coffee service in the mornings that feels like a genuine hospitality gesture rather than an afterthought. Kids' options are solid with a dedicated kids menu, which, as a traveling parent, I never take for granted.

The dinner and bar atmosphere in the evening is equally beautiful. The dining room transforms under warm candlelight into something genuinely romantic. Tables are well-spaced, the bar is stocked and handsome, and the botanical arrangements add to the sense that you're somewhere thoughtfully art-directed.

Pool & Outdoor

The pool area is a real win. Lined with teal-toned chaise lounges and oversized umbrellas, it's genuinely pretty — the kind of pool deck that photographs well and, more importantly, actually feels great to spend a full day at. The vibe is calm and curated, never chaotic.

The cabana is a step above. Private, beautifully appointed with its own restroom, and set up in a way that makes the space feel genuinely luxurious rather than just a glorified tent. Our kids watched a lightning storm roll in from the cabana with their grandma one evening, one of those spontaneous travel memories that immediately becomes the thing everyone talks about on the way home. The outdoor space at this hotel has real character.

The Beach

Collins Avenue puts you steps from the beach, and the Shelborne's location makes it easy to wander over whenever the mood strikes. Miami Beach in its raw form — sea grape vines, tall swaying dune grass, the iconic pastel lifeguard stands — is always worth a morning walk, and this address gives you direct access to all of it. On overcast days, the beach has a moody, cinematic quality that is entirely its own kind of beautiful.

A Note on Families

The Shelborne is legitimately family-friendly in a way that doesn't feel forced. The villa layout with the interior staircase gives kids a sense of their own adventure. The pool area is manageable and calm. The restaurant accommodates without any fuss. And there is something about the hotel's warm, unhurried energy that makes the whole experience feel easy rather than stressful — which, as any traveling parent knows, is the highest possible compliment.

The Verdict

The Shelborne Miami Proper is the kind of hotel that makes you feel like you found something before the rest of the world caught on. The design is exceptional, the food philosophy is rare and worth celebrating, and the overall energy of the property is exactly right for where South Beach is heading: elevated, intentional, and a little quieter than the scene just a few blocks south.

Is it perfect? Not quite yet. The rooms could use more storage, the construction is a temporary reality of being early, and you'll want to bring your patience to the restaurant. But none of that diminished our experience in any meaningful way. What the Shelborne Miami Proper gets right — the interiors, the food, the pool, the sense of place — it gets very right.

If you're planning a Miami trip and want to stay somewhere that feels like a genuine discovery rather than another predictable luxury hotel, this is it. Book the cabana. Order the farm eggs. Have the Counter Culture coffee. Stay an extra day. You'll be glad you did.
