I have a rule about places: I don't go back until I've cleared the list of everywhere I still want to go. Sensei Porcupine Creek is the exception to that rule. I first stayed at this former private estate tucked into the mountains above Palm Desert a while back (and wrote about it in 2024 here), and I left with the kind of restored feeling you dream a vacation will offer. So when the chance came to go back, this time with my mom and a group of friends, I did not hesitate for a single second.
What makes Sensei different from every other luxury wellness retreat I've visited is the specificity of the programming. There's no generic "relax and refresh" vibe here. The entire experience is built around a framework they call Move, Nourish, Rest, and every element of your stay is oriented around that philosophy. The property itself, a sprawling estate with individual casitas, a private pool, and some of the most beautiful grounds in the desert, makes it worthy of a visit in and of itself.
But here's what I want to talk about, because not enough people do: Sensei Porcupine Creek might be the best corporate offsite or group retreat venue in the country, and I'm not just saying that because the casitas are gorgeous (they are). I'm saying it because the combination of structured programming, individual customization, world-class food, and competitive activities creates an experience that actually delivers on what corporate events aim to do.
The Property and the Vibe
Porcupine Creek was originally built as a private estate, and it therefore feels like someone's extraordinarily well-resourced home.
The property sits against the mountains outside Palm Desert, and depending on the time of day, the light on those mountains will make you stop whatever you're doing and just stare. (My mom stopped mid-sentence on the tennis court when she spotted a mountain lion crossing the hillside. A mountain lion. In the middle of our lesson. We absolutely love it here.) The gardens are lush and impeccably maintained, the pools are surrounded by palm trees and bougainvillea, and the casitas have that warm, wood-beam California desert architecture that feels both cozy and luxe.

The Programming (That Sets Sensei Apart)
Every Sensei stay comes with a fully customized itinerary built around the Move, Nourish, Rest pillars. I attended a metabolic health session led by a registered dietitian (alongside many other qualifications) Brooke Damerel, MPH, RD, NBC-HWC, that was one of the most informative hours I've spent in years. We were each fitted with an Abbott Lingo continuous glucose monitor, walked through how to interpret our data, and given a personalized framework for understanding how food, sleep, stress, and movement all interact. I walked out thinking differently about what I eat for breakfast (no more oatmeal without protein).

There are group classes every morning, ranging from strength circuit training to meditation and yoga, a closing ceremony where your Guide walks you through a personalized "Guide to Growth" report based on your goals and data from the stay, and insight sessions on things like how your built environment shapes your habits and decision-making. It sounds like a lot, and it is, but it never feels overwhelming.
For groups specifically, this programming structure is brilliant. Everyone has individual sessions tailored to their own goals, but the shared classes and evening programming create natural opportunities for connection. Nobody is sitting through a trust fall exercise. Instead, you're learning something together, competing on a tennis court, making cocktails, and the conversations that happen in those moments are the real ROI.
The Spa (Specifically, the Best Facial of my Life)
I have to talk about the Advanced Renewal Facial, because I've been describing it to everyone I know since I got home, and I need to stop doing that verbally and just put it in writing. This was a two-hour facial unlike any I've ever had. The technician never left my body for the entire two hours (something I then came to expect from my facialists in LA). She was working my face, my arms, my neck, my feet, constantly in motion, constantly creating this full-body sensory experience that felt almost meditative. If you skip the facial, I will consider it a personal failure on my part.

My mom had a Calming Body Cocoon treatment during our stay, which included a melted candle wax massage, a warm wrap, and a cranial sequence, and she said she floated back to the casita afterward. We compared notes at dinner, and both agreed the Sensei spa team operates at a completely different level.

Tennis (With a Former Top-10 US Player)
I play tennis and have played on many courts in many nice places. The courts at Porcupine Creek are stunning, with a backdrop of palm trees and mountains. But the real draw is the instruction. Our semi-private lesson was led by a former top-10-ranked US tennis player, Caroline Vis, which, if you play tennis, you understand is a huge deal. The feedback was specific, technical, and useful in a way that casual resort tennis instruction rarely is.

The Food (Nobu, but Make It Wellness)
Sensei by Nobu is the dining experience on the property, and it delivers the food you'd expect from that partnership while threading it through the Nourish philosophy. Think: impeccably sourced ingredients, Japanese-inflected preparation, and dishes that taste good rather than "healthy" in the way that word usually signals deprivation.

One of the most unexpectedly fun evenings of our stay was the Art of the Perfect Sip cocktail class. I'm not a big drinker, but I made all three drinks on the menu (the Coco Shiso, the Oasis Margarita, and the "Dated" Old Fashioned), and they were fantastic. There's something about being handed a recipe card and a shaker and told you're making your own cocktail at a luxury wellness retreat that is both absurd and delightful.

Why Sensei Is the Answer to the Group Retreat Question
The best organizations – the ones attracting and retaining top talent – are the ones that treat recovery as a performance investment rather than a nice-to-have. The World Health Organization now recognizes burnout as an occupational phenomenon. Burned-out employees are more likely to leave, more likely to call in sick, and significantly less likely to bring their best thinking to the table. The qualities organizations most want in their leaders, such as strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, creativity, and resilience, all degrade when recovery is neglected.
Sensei understands this. The programming here isn't just wellness content. It's a structured framework to help people understand how they operate and what it would take to operate better. That's extraordinarily valuable for a leadership team, a group of founders, or any cohort of high-performers who've been running too hard for too long.
But I want to be clear that Sensei groups don't have to look corporate. My mom and I are a pair. Four mother-daughter duos coming for a tennis, yoga, and spa weekend? That's a Sensei group. A YPO chapter. A professional women's organization. A recreational tennis doubles team. A group of founders who met at a conference three years ago and have been saying "we should do a retreat" ever since. Sensei Porcupine Creek works for all of it, and the program flexes accordingly. Individual wellness consultations mean everyone gets something personal. Shared programming means everyone gets something together. The formula is simple, and it consistently works.

One scheduling note: Sensei Porcupine Creek embraces what they call a seasonal pause each summer, July 19 through September 1, 2026. Their take on it is exactly right: some of nature's most important work happens beneath the surface, in periods of dormancy, recovery, and renewal, and people aren't so different. The retreat reopens on September 1, making fall the perfect window to book.
