I’m a New Yorker, which means a few noteworthy things: I swear by egg and cheese sandwiches from any food cart, I’ll take a yellow cab over an Uber any day, and selecting my footwear is the single biggest decision I make every morning. The reason for the last one is simple: I walk almost everywhere. Even when I take the train, I still walk several miles a day, from the subway station to a coffee shop, to running errands and meeting up with friends. I can easily get 10,000 steps without even trying.
All of that is to say, comfortable shoes are a must. But, I want to be cute! I want to be chic! I don’t want to wear sneakers everyday. What's a city girl to do? After years of wearing trendy shoes that give me blisters and make my feet ache, I’ve finally found the answer. Enter Margaux, my new favorite shoe brand that makes comfortable shoes that don’t look like comfortable shoes. They are stylish and chic, elegant and totally on-trend.
Margaux’s selection of shoes runs the gamut, from delicate and dainty ballet flats to chunky platforms and even rugged lug sole boots. Each style is comfier than the last, but never at the cost of visual aesthetics. All of the shoes are designed in New York, which might explain the emphasis on comfort, before they’re handmade in Spain.
But, the truly remarkable thing about Margaux— and part of how they’re made to fit so perfectly— is that the brand makes shoes for non-standard shoe sizes in addition to the norms. Margaux offers inclusive sizing, from 3 US (33 EU) to 14 US (34 EU) with half-sized in between, and narrow, medium, and wide widths in nearly every style. If you ever thought finding a comfortable and stylish shoe is hard, imagine trying to find one if you’re not a standard size 6 to 10. The specificity in sizing is why each pair fits like it was made for you: because it was.
Thanks to Margaux, my days of gallivanting around New York City in sneakers day in and day out are behind me. I’ve traded in my trainers for my favorite pair of Phoebes, and I’m delighted to never look back. Below I’ve rounded up some of my favorite tried-and-true styles as well as the one that’s currently on my wishlist.
From the moment I pulled my first pair of Margaux shoes— The Phoebe in Leopard Suede— out of the box and slipped my feet into them, I felt like Cinderella. They were pure perfection, as if they’d been divinely created just for me. I expected the ballet flat to be painfully uncomfortable, just like the flats we all wore in the early aughts, but they were the exact opposite. They are soft and cushy, and the elastic strap helps them stay securely on your feet. They fit like a glove, and I put a handful of miles on them that very first day. I didn’t need to break them in at all, and they go with everything. I consider The Phoebe my gateway shoe, responsible for my newfound obsession with the brand. If I had to recommend one shoe for city girls everywhere, it would be The Phoebe, hands down.

I have two things to confess: 1. I hate wearing heels, and 2. I am only 5 feet tall. The latter suggests that I should suck it up and deal with the former, but I can’t bring myself to wear shoes that hurt, and heels almost always do. But, not The Bardi. It’s part platform, part heel, with a chunky sole that makes it easy to walk. I wear them with day dresses, cocktail dresses, jeans and trousers; they’re easily dressed up or down. I love The Bardi because they feel like they’re straight out of the ‘90s, and yet they’re modern. They come in three neutral colors, including a camel-colored python print that is bound to turn heads.

How do I love The Ada? Let me count the ways. Their classic silhouette, feminine bow, and low heel make them an elegant closet staple that can instantly take a casual outfit and make it feel special and chic. Think of The Ada as a ballet flat’s older, more sophisticated cousin. The Ada’s bow isn’t just cute, it’s functional: the cord is adjustable so you can achieve a custom fit. Plus, the sole has plush foam padding, so I can walk just as many miles in The Ada as I can in my Phoebes. They come in five solid colors and one mesh print, but I opted for the Cognac Nappa leather knowing full well I’d want to wear them with a white tee and jeans as much as with my favorite dresses.

One of my dearest friends is a big fan of The MX 35, not just because it is quite literally the most perfect low summer heel, but because she loves being able to wear a trendy, sophisticated shoe in a larger size. With bigger feet, she’s had a hard time finding styles that are dainty and elegant, let alone comfortable. The MX 35 makes her feel chic, and after all, isn’t that the point of fashion? To make us feel good about ourselves? They’re her favorite shoe of the summer because she can walk in them all day and feel like the queen she is while doing it. The MX 35 comes in five colors, including a fun denim suede and edgy python print.

My love affair with Margaux has left me with a pages-long wishlist, at the top of which is The Dylan Sandal. I am obsessed with the kitten heel and strappy asymmetrical design that is as close to being barefoot as you can be without actually being barefoot. You can’t tell by looking at them, but they have thick, plush foam padding on the bottom that I am certain would hold up against my busy days traversing the city. The one question I still can’t answer, however, is which color I want the most.

It’s hard to peruse the Margaux site without adding every single pair to your cart— at least it is for me. But can you really blame me? How could I possibly go back to wearing hard, painful, blister-causing shoes after discovering that a better, chicer, and comfier alternative exists? There is a style for every occasion, and slowly but surely I fully intend to replace my old, uncomfortable shoes— which affectionately call “sitting shoes” because they’re only tolerable while sitting down— one pair at a time.
