I’ll say it: I’ve tasted a lot (way too many, in fact) of mediocre canned coffees. Don’t get me wrong -- I’m glad that sugary, fatty coffees (yes, Starbucks Frappuccinos, I’m talking about you) have gotten the boot -- but why are all the new, healthier entrants so… bland? While the black coffee purists have always had healthy and tasty canned coffee options, those of us looking for a little more fun have been left hanging. It’s 2023: surely someone (please, anyone!) can create a healthier alternative that actually tastes great, too.

I heard about Super Coffee, a brand claiming to do just that, when Dax Shepard gave it his and Kristen Bell’s seal of approval on a recent Armchair Expert episode. In addition to the Bell-Shepards’s praise, Super Coffee has received endorsements and investments from Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Aaron Rodgers, and a bevvy of other celebrities and athletes. Intrigued by the hype and intent on finding something better for my fellow health conscious coffee radicals, I sampled all three of the celeb-loved brand’s new plant-based bottled coffees to see just how super Super Coffee tastes.

From Humble Beginnings

Like many jealousy-inducing success stories, Super Coffee’s story begins in a college dorm room. Jordan DeCicco, a college basketball player at the time, was unimpressed by the ingredient lists on the back of the energy drinks and coffee drinks he could find at his local store. He and his brothers Jake and Jim DeCicco figured they could craft something better -- so they did.

The Decicco brothers appeared on Shark Tank shortly after -- and while they didn’t receive an investment from any of the Sharks, they caught the attention of several other big names: Alex Rodriguez and Patrick Schwarzenegger reached out to capitalize on the Sharks’ missed opportunity. Super Coffee has grown exponentially and was even recently named the fastest growing food and beverage brand in America by Inc Magazine.

What’s The Buzz All About?

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t impressed by all the star power behind Super Coffee. What’s the deal -- are they selling magic in a bottle? On paper, it appears so: a better-for-you, better-tasting, enhanced coffee product. Super Coffee claims to taste as delicious as Starbucks Frappuccinos (which, for the record contain 52g of sugar and 370 calories -- why did no one tell my younger self that?) while boasting 0 grams of sugar, 10 grams of protein, and only 80 calories per can.

Made with plant-based pea protein that contains all nine essential amino acids, healthy fats from MCT oil, and caffeinated coffee, Super Coffee is designed to offer a sustained, jitters-free energy with no crash. On top of that, Super Coffee is keto-friendly, lactose-free, and gluten-free -- and the brand just expanded its plant-based line of on-the-go bottled offerings to include French Vanilla, Coconut Mocha, and Sweet Cream varieties, among other, more unique flavors like Strawberry Glazed Donut.  I had the opportunity to taste all three OG flavors.

Cracking Open A Can

Opting to keep things simple, I sampled the French Vanilla flavor to start. I was amazed at how quickly Super Coffee transported me straight back to my childhood. For the first time in a long time, I actually had to slow myself down so I didn’t drink my Super Coffee can too quickly. Curious as to how the coffee could taste that sweet while containing no sugar, I reviewed Super Coffee’s ingredients and was impressed to find a list shorter than the carton of oat milk in my fridge: organic Colombian coffee, pea protein, cocoa powder, MCT oil, potassium phosphate, monk fruit, natural vanilla flavor, calcium carbonate, organic green coffee caffeine, glean gum.

All three flavors have that surely-this-can’t-be-good-for-me taste, and my favorite of the bunch is Coconut Mocha. It has an extra layer of depth compared to the others, but in truth, they’re all delicious. Even more exciting was the little jolt of energy I felt that propelled me through my morning’s tasks. The best part was that I slowly descended back to reality a few hours later, avoiding the ever-feared crash most coffees produce.

For the record, if you’re a black coffee drinker, Super Coffee’s canned coffees aren’t for you. When I say they’re sweet, I mean they’re really sweet. Luckily, Super Coffee has an extended line of products to choose from: pods, creamers, grounds, espresso, cold brews, and several specialty canned options like Maple Pumpkin and White Chocolate Peppermint that contain milk.

Truly Buzzing

I knew I liked Super Coffee as soon as I took my first sip, and I knew I really liked Super Coffee later that night when I got into bed and legitimately felt excited to fall asleep so I could wake up and try another flavor. As someone fortunate enough to try a lot of products, I know I’ve found something special when it creeps into my subconscious like that. Delicious, nutritious, and nostalgic, Super Coffee hits all the right notes -- and it may just be magic in a can.

5 More Reasons To Love Super Coffee:

  • Super Coffee has that frappuccino-sweet taste while (somehow!) remaining sugar-free. Monk fruit serves as a natural sweetener, and Super Coffee contains no added sugar.
  • It contains a unique blend of MCT oil, coffee, and protein, which means no jitters or crashes.
  • It's satisfying in the way fancy iced coffees and lattes are -- and at $3.33/bottle, they cost a fraction of the price.
  • Super Coffee delivers straight to your door and offers one-time purchasing or convenient monthly subscriptions.
  • The brand has an all-star lineup of celebrities and athletes who love Super Coffee so much, they’ve even invested in it.
