My grandmother is an impressive woman. At 98 years old, she’s lived on 3 continents, raised 3 children and many more grandkids, and has some of the most jaw dropping stories I’ve heard. I love spending time with her, listening to her stories and learning from her infinite well of tips and tricks for any and all situations (we might call them “life hacks,” she would just call them common sense). In short, she’s old enough to know herself well, and is very much still ruling the roost.
One of the hardest parts of living on the other side of the country from my family is missing holidays like Mother’s Day, so gift giving is an important way to stay connected. In addition to my own mother, I like to pay tribute to my grandmother on Mother’s Day by giving her small luxuries to indulge in – if anyone’s earned some rest and relaxation, it’s her!
My grandmother’s strong sense of self, forged over the course of her adventurous life, makes her one of my favorite people to shop for. Shopping for family members can be fraught, but there’s no second-guessing what kind of gift my grandmother will enjoy – I know it as soon as I see it. The key to shopping for our grandparents, especially on a special holiday like Mother’s Day, is to listen to what they value, and think about how they spend their time. Practical gifts are as welcome as little indulgences, but for grandmothers especially (many of whom have raised multiple generations and had little time for themselves), a little luxury is more than earned!
