Why Dyson Launched a New Airwrap
In 2018, Dyson launched the original Airwrap, and it sent shockwaves through beauty communities everywhere. Never before had technology and hair health been so seamlessly integrated into daily hair routines. By using what’s known as the coanda effect — an airflow phenomenon that draws and wraps hair around the barrel — the multi-styler introduced a new way to curl, smooth, and volumize hair without excess heat. It was a defining moment in beauty history and the product to get your hands on.
Alas, the innovative styler also came with a learning curve and pain points that could be intimidating for first-timers. If you owned one, you probably watched one of the thousands of YouTube tutorials for help. So, Dyson engineers launched the Airwrap Coanda 2x ($699) as an answer to that feedback. It’s now part of a three-Airwrap lineup — joining the Airwrap Origin ($499) and the Airwrap i.d. ($599)— so you can choose the version that best suits your budget, styling needs, and how much tech you want in your routine.
What’s Different & How It Works
The updated Airwrap is lighter (literally less than a pound), more powerful, and more intuitive to use. Styling attachments have been revamped to include barrels that grip better (now round instead of conical), square tips that allow you to easily adjust airflow direction, and brush bristles redesigned to reduce snagging. Altogether there are six attachments included in each of the two available sets: Curly to Coily or Straight to Wavy (which debuts the new AirSmooth 2x attachment).
But the revved-up Hyperdymium™ 2 motor is where this hair tool really shines. More power (150,000 rpm, to be specific) means more airflow, which translates to faster drying and better curling. It’s just as powerful as a standalone hair dryer but with the versatility of a multi-styler.
And because it’s Dyson, the bells and whistles don’t end there. An app integration allows you to build a unique hair profile and pair your tool’s settings accordingly. The attachments use smart sensors to constantly measure and adjust heat to minimize damage. It’s…fancy.
My (Short Hair) Review of the Dyson Airwrap Coanda 2x
My goal with the Dyson Airwrap Coanda 2x was the same as its predecessor: a polished style, done quickly, without frying my ends. To get the full intuitive experience, I went in cold without reading instructions or watching tutorials (read: I was excited and impatient). It was absurdly easy. Afterwards, I set up the app and configured my settings — which was also easy and only took like five minutes. Will it make your experience better? Yes. Is it absolutely necessary to get the hang of the tool? Maybe not.
Over the course of a week, I put the styler through my usual hair scenarios. On day one, I went all-in with a full curl routine using the 1.2” barrel — the hair latch-on was instant, and the curls held up all day. And not just any curls — these were bouncy, voluminous, just-left-the-salon curls. By mid-week I was testing the round brush attachment to touch up my next-day hair. I knew that the Airwrap works best on damp hair, but I was genuinely surprised by its improved performance on pre-dried hair. I was able to smooth out my lopsided bedhead and add a little oomph back into my roots for volume.
I didn’t reach for the 1.6” barrel, Anti-Snag Loop Brush, or Airsmooth attachments very much (some not at all) throughout the week. So because I’m short on counter space, they’ll likely be relegated to storage to pull out for specific use cases. And in case you’re like me and fried your first Airwrap on a trip to Mexico City (RIP), it should be noted that the Coanda 2x is still not dual-voltage and cannot be used outside of the country you purchase it in — not even with a voltage converter.
Final Thoughts: Is The New Dyson Airwrap Worth $700?
If you’re new to the world of multi-stylers and are tired of frying your ends on scalding-hot tools, the Coanda 2x is worth taking a long look at. It’s shockingly faster than the original, gives bespoke styling that lasts well into the day, and is easier/comfier/all around nicer to use. You’ll probably use it every day, and you’ll probably have great hair every day.
However, if you already own an earlier Airwrap model, dropping $700 might be hard to justify. It’s a big-ticket buy and, in this economy, is worth evaluating against your life and styling habits. For me, the Coanda 2x has earned its coveted spot on my counter — even with my short hair — and my hair is all the better for it.
