I’m a devotee of monochrome dressing. Whether I’m trying to minimize and build an edited capsule wardrobe for summer travel or I need to let loose and go on a seasonal shopping spree, building monochromatic looks from my tried-and-true favorite colors has helped me shop more efficiently and look put together on even my most couch gremlin days. So when I saw videos talking about the color drenching home decor trend on TikTok, it was love at first sight. Why hadn’t I been applying the same monochromatic mania that had transformed my wardrobe to my home decor choices? I knew I had to try the trend out for myself. Luckily for me, I just moved across the country into a new apartment – the perfect excuse to redecorate using the tenets of color drenching.
Color drenching is all about choosing a central paint color and exploring it through every surface of a room (walls, molding, ceiling, doors, etc). This approach can also be extended into a holistic approach to decorating a room – using variations on your wall color in everything from carpets to linens to furniture. But this doesn’t mean creating a visual palette that’s flat or boring – far from it. Focusing one one color means that you can really highlight texture, pattern, and material, creating a maximalist look that still appears cohesive and intentional. It’s the perfect trend for anyone wanting to expand from the taupe and beige minimalism that’s been all the rage for the last few years…but still might be a little nervous about introducing bold colors into their home.
So for all my fellow color drenching newbies, I created a color drenching how-to guide to show people how I learned to stop worrying and embrace the monochrome.
First up is choosing your signature paint color to color drench a room. My new apartment is in a historic building with a lot of beautifully-stained natural wood. I decided to choose my bedroom as my first room to color drench since I knew I wanted to create a really cozy environment. Since I didn’t want to paint over the beautiful natural tones of the apartment’s parquet flooring and built-ins, I needed to find a color that complimented the warm wood. I chose Farrow & Ball’s Red Earth in Dead Flat, a matte finish with 2% sheen. Red Earth’s light terracotta had an Italian feel to it that I couldn’t resist, plus it matched well with 2025’s Pantone Color of the Year, Mocha Mousse. Farrow & Ball have the most gorgeous colors, a wide array of finishes, and their website features a handy paint calculator to help you figure out how much paint your project needs. Added bonus: they also have free delivery on all orders! And their website has extensive advice on how to best apply their paint. They also have a color consultancy program which I’m dying to try…

Once I decided on my wall color, I started to strategize on how to bring Red Earth’s light terracotta shade into my bedroom furnishings. This Article ottoman was the perfect soft seating for my little retro dressing area off my main bedroom.

When I saw this set of bed linens in Shei Marcelline’s excellent TQE article on Quince sheets, I started to get really excited about the color I’d chosen to color drench my bedroom. Incorporating terracotta into the details of my sheets allowed me to infuse my color drenching into my bed – one of the largest surfaces in the bedroom. I love everything that Quince makes, from their high quality cashmere sweaters to their gorgeous curtains and floor coverings.

I matched my bedside rug to these gorgeous leather slippers from Sabah. I’ve gone through 2 pairs of Sabah slippers in the past few years, so they’re essentially a home decor element in my mind – no bedroom is complete without it. I love this warm reddish brown, inspired by Mexican Talavera tile.

I’ve been in love with Montana Furniture’s multicolored, modular furniture for years. Any color you choose to color drench a room in, they’ll have the perfect shelving and storage cabinetry to match. Their chocolatey terracotta hue Masala is a perfect variation on my light terracotta walls.

I have huge windows, so my color drenching effect would’ve been ruined unless I could find the perfect curtains to match. Enter, CB2’s linen curtains in Dark Terracotta. Perfection. They come in a wide range of colors and have options for blackout or non-blackout. Since I’d have to leave my Red Earth hued womb of a bedroom eventually, I opted for non-blackout.

By far the best purchase I made when redesigning my bedroom was the Hatch Restore 3. It’s a beautifully designed alarm clock, sophisticated noise machine, and soothing meditation aid all rolled into one. You control the Hatch Restore via the Hatch app, which also has a subscription plan that gets you access to a huge library of customizable sleep routine audio. The cocoa color is a lovely tonal match for my terracotta color-drenched room, but the lighter colors are beautiful as well if you decide to go for more of a putty/mocha mousse color scheme. Hatch has genuinely completely transformed my bedtime routine – helping me go screen free before bed for the first time in years – which has in turn totally changed my mornings. Whenever I use my Hatch routine before bed, I wake up more deeply refreshed and ready to embrace the day. The device is also just beautiful to look at – the perfect decor element for your bedside table.

Special mention goes to this absolutely gorgeous set of terracotta furniture from New Volumes designed by Thomas Coward. I don’t think I’ve ever coveted a side table more. It doesn’t appear that they ship to the US, but hopefully our Australian and UK readers can jump on this stunning piece.
