I’ll be honest: there’s “Me Before Wipes,” and “Me After Wipes.”
Me Before Wipes made that twisty emoji face every time I’d be at someone’s house and notice a squished packet of bathroom wipes atop their toilet. I think I’d even mouth, “Ew, why?” when I’d see them. They felt unnecessary, they felt environmentally hostile, they felt chemically challenged, and they felt sure to clog any toilet they were flushed down—even the flushable ones.
Then I discovered non-toxic bathroom wipes (safe enough for a baby’s bottom) during the pandemic—Me After Wipes. “So this is what everyone’s been doing,” I thought. All of a sudden, toilet paper was a deviant antithesis to how I wanted to live my most intimate life, and I simply couldn’t go back in time. However, one thing I could not get past was the fluttering, repetitive voice spinning in my head, telling me that every wipe thrown in the trash was an environmental hazard, and I definitely didn’t trust wipes that claimed to be “flushable.” I couldn’t figure out how to balance my newfound bathroom-bound transformation with my desire to “do good.”

Biom is making it possible to “get you a girl who can do both.”
Their latest Flushable Wipes actually are what they say they are and do what they say they’ll do—all the while providing a soothing, truly clean feeling in a wipe that is safe for sensitive skin and 100% plastic-free.
I gave their wipeable wellness a try to see if their promise of flushability stood up (or flushed down) in my bathroom’s court of law.

Taking a Swipe at Regular Wipes
When people use flushable wipes, it’s in the hopes of feeling more “clean.” Makes sense. However, most wipes out there are anything but clean (and no, I’m not missing a “T” from that “but”).

Most store-bought wipes contain parabens and sulfates—also known as preservatives and cleansing agents—that can lead to hormone disruption and skin irritation with long-term use. Sometimes these ingredients don’t even make their way onto ingredient labels. Within the wellness space, we’ve all agreed to forsake them in our skincare and beauty regimens, so it certainly doesn’t make sense that they’d be ideal for a part of the body that doesn’t see the sun (unless you have a perineum practice, in which case I won’t judge you!).
Not only do conventional wipes use harsh chemicals that can affect our literal skin microbiomes and pH balance (again, for our very special place!), but they are also often made from plastic and don’t actually flush—yes, even the ones that claim they’re flushable. This has a direct impact on the environment and our bodies. I say this having gotten a blood test in 2024 that tested high in microplastics!!

All About the Biom
Biom’s brand name is no accident. All of its products have been designed to be non-toxic with skin-safe ingredients that don’t compromise on an effective clean—whether that’s for your countertop or your lower bottom.
Their Flushable Wipes are anything but standard…but they are flushable and IWSFG-certified, which means they pass the highest standards of “flushability” (yes, a real word)! Unlike the everyday wipe, Biom’s are made from plant-based fibers, contain zero plastic, and are formulated with derm-tested, sensitive skin-approved clean ingredients that are free from parabens, phthalates, alcohol, synthetic fragrance, and triclosan (all of the hormone / skin-disrupting chemicals I’ve mentioned).
Because of how they’re made, they’re completely biodegradable, flushing just like real toilet paper.

A Total Pipe Dream
Before I started my Biom Behavioral Therapy, I had a secret place for my current wipe supply, hiding just behind my toilet in a special vase that no one could see. Even with my appreciation for the process, I still found myself filled with shame at the thought of someone knowing the intimate approach to my bathroom behavior.
When my Biom wipes arrived, I was ecstatic to see they came with a Biom Dispenser—a refillable, airtight, magnetically sealed container. It looked like it was made for my minimally designed bathroom, selling itself as a fixture with function over a functional fixture, if you know what I mean. I was no longer in hiding. I was about to feel good and do good.
I loaded up my dispenser and began testing.

I was immediately pleased with how soft and smooth the wipes were. I only needed one per use, which was easy to achieve, given the dispenser was uniquely designed for a one-wipe pull. If you’re a wipe owner, then you know that pulling out a single wipe from a squished pack of wipes during your most vulnerable moments is semi-catastrophic (and deeply wasteful).
Everything went “really well” from a cleanliness, pH-balancing angle. Like, I felt clean, but I didn’t feel like I had compromised my “special” microbiome for such results. And if you know me, I care about two things in life: bone broth and pH balance. We need both things for protection, people!
Most importantly, the Flushable Wipes…flushed. They actually flushed! No trace, no clogging, no worrying. My initial flush was white-knuckled, and I slowly had to unlearn my bathroom legacy burdens of fear as it related to flushing wipes, which have been a no-no as long as I can remember.
Since my experiment, I’ve really eased into the idea that wipes are really just a facet of wellness, and bathroom care can be self-care like anything else in one’s routine. As sung in Wicked, “Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”
