First Class Sleep: The Best Bassinets for Your Newborn

When the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) announced that the safest place to have your infant sleep for the first six months is in the same room as you (but in their own bedding-free space), manufacturers got to work producing a number of great bedside baby bassinets. There’s now a robust range, from smart bassinets that “listen” for your baby’s cries and react to them, to simple fuss-free bassinets with breathable mesh sides.

Bassinets are good for nursing moms and help a mom who is recovering from a C-section by making it easier to reach the baby. They’re also nice from a space-saving perspective because they’re smaller than a full crib. Having your baby close saves you some time and sanity.

At The Quality Edit, we’ve sourced the web to bring you the very best picks. Below, the top rated bassinets we know you’ll love.

How To Choose The Best Bassinet For You

When considering what kind of bassinet to buy, think about factors such as safety, how long your baby can use it, portability and how easy it is to keep clean. Also think about how it would fit your space, what extras you would like – and how you’re looking to use it. Consider your existing space and your existing plans or expectations when you bring your baby home, specifically these key features to find the best bassinet for your needs:

Size

A bassinet is smaller than a crib, but some are more unwieldy than others. Consider how much space you have in your room.

Be truthful with yourself about what will fit in your space, including the amount of space between your bed and the wall, for example. Is there a way to keep the bassinet out of reach from other children or pets? Is there room for you to walk around to access the bathroom?

Read the dimensions carefully and maybe map out the bassinet footprint on your floor. (Watch out for legs that extend too far, for example, to avoid a tripping hazard.)

Weight Limit

The weight limit of the bassinet is a major factor in determining how long your baby can safely stay in it. The higher the weight limit, the longer you can put off moving them to a larger crib and possibly out of your room.

Height Adjust

If you plan to keep the bassinet near your bed, you’ll want one with an adjustable height to get the perfect fit. (This is a complete game changer.) However, if the bassinet will be in your room but not bedside, the height might be less important.

Still, it’s important to at least have a couple of adjustment options in case you want to change positions of the bassinet or alter the accessibility to it in terms of how much you’ll be bending down to it.

Side That Lowers

A side that easily lowers is a must-have for moms recovering from c-sections particularly. But it’s also amazing for all parents. After the hundredth reach over a high side panel, you’ll know exactly why — spoiler alert: fewer aches and strains.

Portability

Some bassinets are designed for travel, while others are perfect for movement around the house or to have right by your bed and only your bed. No matter what type of bassinet you’re looking for, ensure it’s able to be taken anywhere with you — trust us, it’ll be a gamechanger.

Think about this: will you anticipate needing to bring your sleeping baby into another room with you? Maybe to go to another child’s room or to another level of the house to do normal household chores? Or even to grandmas? If so, look for a removable bassinet feature, a quick-fold option or a crib that folds flat and includes a carrying case.

Soothing Options

It might be hard to anticipate whether or not your baby will appreciate light vibration, melodies, or a slight rocking motion. It’s always best to have options on hand for when your baby is feeling not-so happy. This may or may not work (fingers crossed it does!), but at least the option is there and you’ll have tried it. And who knows, maybe they’ll grow to like it.

Some of our best bassinet picks include vibration options as well as the other lifesaving features like adjustable height and a side wall that lowers with ease.

Our Top Picks

As you browse, you’ll probably notice just how many bassinet options there are. Here are our picks for the best bassinets of 2024.

How Long Can I Use A Bassinet?

There’s no set rule on when a baby should stop sleeping on a bassinet, but the reality is that you can only use a bassinet for a relatively brief time window. Each manufacturer will typically state a weight and size limit for the product. Even if your baby is still under the size limits, you’ll want to move them out of the bassinet once they start to roll around, and certainly before they can pull themselves up or get onto their hands and knees.

This might happen in just a month or two for some babies, while others will be closer to the 4 to 6 month mark. A bassinet is only going to last about three to five months, so it’s a shorter-term product. But even so, there are lots of benefits to having a bassinet.
